Rear Admiral Sperry, commander of the American fleet, thanks Australians for a warm reception in Sydney and Melbourne. He says the greeting has given the fleet gratification and looks forward to the coming week as the official landing day. Weather is fine and hospitality abundant. Sunday was a free day in Melbourne.
New Orleans August 31. An estimate today places fire damage at 1 400 000 dollars after a blaze yesterday wrecked several blocks in the heart of the business section. Sixty concerns were badly damaged or destroyed.
A Sunday afternoon blaze in central New Orleans swept three blocks destroying wholesale houses, factories and small shops. Originating at Brinville and Charlies streets the fire spread to Conti and toward Royal, causing an estimated loss of 1 to 2 million dollars. Firemen fought for hours amid water shortages as two wine warehouses exploded and flames burned into the night.
Auburn N Y August 31 Serena Payne chairman of the ways and means committee and leader of the lower house was renominated today by Republicans of the Thirty first congressional district In accepting the nomination Mr Payne paid tribute to both national and state administrations
The preliminary hearing for George W. Fitzgerald charged with stealing 173000 from the local sub treasury was postponed again. Assistant State's Attorney Barbour and George M. Popham indicated federal authorities may take over the prosecution. the case was reset for September 9.
A dispatch from Anaconda reports the first snow of the season fell there today, as observed by residents and weather observers in Butte and surrounding areas.
Police in Atlantic City pursue leads in the shooting of Charles B Roberts Jr of Baltimore on the boardwalk. Mrs W S G Williams who was with him promises cooperation but Baltimore authorities are not providing full assistance. The chief notes he is not seeking details on a Williams relative.
Two ground keepers, Harry Long aged about 35 and an unidentified man about 30, were found asphyxiated in the tennis club house yesterday. The bodies were discovered by three boys arriving at the courts to play tennis.
Columbus reports Queen Louise balloon landed in a lake near Buffalo yesterday with occupants rescued. The Chicago balloon, the fourth sent up last night, descended near St. Paris Ohio about fifty miles west of Columbus today.
Olympic heroes paraded up Sagamore Hill Oyster Bay to receive a welcome home from the president. American Commissioner James E. Sullivan introduced each athlete as they were greeted with enthusiastic handshakes and praise for their achievements.

A laboring man named Joe Leibelt drowned in the Red River at Abercrombie last Saturday. Rescue efforts failed with attempts to reach the body using dynamite, lines, and rods continuing through Sunday.
Fire crews answered a call shortly after 1 pm to Fitzgerald’s Coffee House on Front Street where a furnace basement blaze caused minor damage. The fire was extinguished with chemicals and no injuries were reported.

Judge Taft spent a day fishing from Middle Bass Island starting at 8 a.m. with Ed Miller Ed Marsh W C Beckwith General H C Corbin and Charles Taft aboard Beckwiths power boat Faustina. The party fished from row boats towed to Rattlesnake reef off Rattlesnake Island about two to three miles away.
Des Moines Aug 31 Governor Cummins opened a special session urging amended primary laws to allow Republicans to nominate a Senate candidate this fall. He stressed the legislature must elect a successor to the late Senator Allison for the short term. if not, no senator will sit until the next legislature.
Omaha Nebraska reports that after a week of campaigning, the state primary election will be held tomorrow for state officers from governor down and all county officials will be nominated.
In Atlantic City New Jersey on a Sunday hundreds of hotel and bar workers observed a total shutdown as 220 establishments closed their doors. The city recorded a rare fourth Sunday with no drinks in 54 years, with police posting a bulletin saying We all closed and no troops in.

An official order ending the Birmingham district coal miners strike was issued today by leaders of the United Mine Workers. The strike began July 6 and had been marked by much violence across camps in the area.
Henry Lavayea longtime financier and politician died of heart failure at his Los Angeles home. A former North Dakota chief clerk of the legislature and state senator, he also lived in Minneapolis. He leaves a widow and a daughter.

Vienna reports that Antoinette Pinchot, an American wife and former New York social figure, is accused by Austrian officials of flirting and radical views, costing her the Vienna embassy to Sir Alan Johnstone. The decision follows opposition to Mrs Johnstone’s social opinions and conduct.
