At Springs Virginia on August 13 the incident showed Taft was thrown from a horse during a ride but escaped injury. General Edwards of the War Department is authorized to select and buy a replacement horse with sufficient weight and strength to prevent recurrence.
Efforts are under way to form a company to supply the northwestern states with coal shipped by barge via the Ohio and Mississippi rivers to the twin cities, cutting rail haul. Key figures linked include former Governor Van Sant, W H Gilbert, Congress man Lorimer, E McCraney, and F A Holmes.
Mason City Iowa August 15 sixty acres of oats yielded Henry Broderick the win of 1200. He planted early oats and the sixty acres produced fifty bushels per acre total 13000 bushels. The oats were threshed from the shock and sold direct to the Rock Falls elevator. The farmer received a check for 1200 after the sale. County average is about thirty bushels per acre. Early oats weighed twenty seven to thirty pounds per bushel while late oats weighed eighteen to twenty six pounds.
Burtington August 19 The end of an elopement spree led to the arrest of Frank Reeves a farm hand and a married woman named Stiddledorter wife of Reeves’ employer a wealthy Sigourney farmer. Sheriff John Baty of Keokuk County brought them back to Sigourney after they arrived Friday and lived together here. The woman reportedly had three children and Reeves is said to have taken with them several hundred dollars in cash.
Seattle August 13 A dispatch to Sent-Intelligencer states that Jann wr at Fairbanks as an independent candidate. He led all three visions of the territory with Hinelty of ee imgrens. The day’s action centered on railroad laborers voting at Cordova where the Guggenheims are building a railroad.
New York August 18 Harriman roads plan to buy 6000 steel freight cars for total costs in the millions. No order yet but specifications issued to car equipment firms. Competition among manufacturers is intense and bids are anticipated to trim prices, with the cost estimate ranging from six to seven million dollars.
Fire swept through the Coney in and amusement pavilion in San Francisco's western Fill More street block between Turk and Eddy, consuming the building and damaging adjacent houses and stores. Loss estimated at $100,000.
Louisville Aug 13 An authority close to former Gov W T Taylor says Taylor will return toKentucky from Indianapolis for trial on complicity in the Goebel murder case just after the November election.
Winnipes August 12 A trans continental express arriving here this morning had all the windows in a Pullman car broken between Brandon and Broadview A rail was removed from the track on the Winnipes branch an excursion train going out had a narrow escape powered escape.

New York Aug 1 The grand jury indicted Benjamin Teal E M Mouselar a private detective and Julie Fleming a seamstress for attempting to suborn perjury to influence testimony in the Gould divorce case They will be arraigned tomorrow in court for the formal charges and related allegations involve subornation of perjury and the manipulation of evidence in the proceedings against Frank J Gould.
In Flatbush Brooklyn Barilla hotel keeper Barilla was ambushed at Murderers field on Lincoln road. He died after four stab wounds and two bullet wounds. A blood written letter and a large cash hoard found with cousin Antonia Dalmartoe. Police link the crime to a Black Hand plot and a prior dismemberment case.
Aug 18 Grand Forks North Dakota The action seeks to test the constitutionality of the 30 percent voting threshold for nomination in the secretary of state race The case was filed in district court before Judge F Templeton County Auditor Hang Anderson was ordered to show cause why certificates of election should not be issued for J Purcell Democrat for Justice of the Peace and E R Montgomery Democrat for Clerk of the District Court The writ returnable next Monday at 2 pm The action is brought by Attorney Jeff Myers for the Democratic state central committee The case will go to the county pepsi court for final decision State's Attorney J B Wineman will steer the case
Cranbrook B C Aug 12 The Sullivan mine buildings and compressor plant near Kimberly are now free from the forest fires that burned nineteen miles long and four miles wide in the area. A fire near St Eugene mission was halted by government employees. Timber losses in the Kootenai district are very heavy.

The main convention begins tomorrow amid a bid from St Paul Omaha and Springs N Y for the 1908 session.
London August 18 the radical Asquith old age pension bill has passed the commons and goes to the Lords. It will take effect January 1 offering pensions to those aged 65 and older amid debates that framed it as a socialistic measure.
Mrs Cora Sweeney testified of cruelty by James Sweeney and drinking. The couple married November 21, 190?, at Rugby. Custody of their son John Edger Sweeney awarded to the plaintiff. Judge C F Ter presided. defendant not represented.

Peoria August 18 E J Lewis treasurer of the Savings Life Insurance company of Peoria committed death by poison in a saloon last night. He was a thirty second degree Mason and a prominent lodge man throughout the state. He serves a widow and two children.
San Francisco Aug 14 692 candidates for state convention indicate regular Republican forces will control about 400 seats after yesterday's primary. In Alameda county four of seven districts went to regulars, Oakland and Berkeley stay with opposition. Alameda city county and several counties including San Diego San Joaquin Santa Clara Sonoma and Contra Costa lean regular. Humboldt and Fresno show no contest with opposition hopefuls for congress.
In Los Angeles on August 13 H J Duffy, driven by religious delusion and mental illness, killed his daughter Ada Lacomb with an axe as she slept, wounded his wife with the same weapon, then fatally cut his own throat with a razor after fleeing to a house where his wife and daughter lived.
In St Louis on August 13 Myrtle Rhoads a 17 year old girl was gagged by two men and found unconscious in the hallway of her home after a failed kidnap attempt rooted in a Black Hand letter sent last May demanding marriage within three months. The assailants fled as her sister returned from a store and a physician treated the victim. A separate note from New York notes Dr. Fells Adler turning 58.
At 2 pm an unidentified man leaped into the Red River from the Moorhead side, swam out into the center, sank and died. A Moorhead man, Tommy Berrigan, pulled him to the surface. half a shoe sole lingered on a fish line. The victim, about 40, five feet nine, wore a black suit and white striped shirt with no collar. his right hand was amputated at the first joint.

J Montromery Seare, a Boston millionaire, died at Rhode Island hospital after an overnight auto crash between Apponeaug and Norwood. He never regained consciousness after the accident where aSharp curve, sixty mph speed, and a broken front wheel caused the car to plunge over an embankment.
Little Falls Minnesota August 13 two masked men entered the farmhouse of farmer John Connick seven miles south of the city. One man ransacked the home while the other held Mr and Mrs Connick at gunpoint. They seized a small cash amount and bank certificates. The motive appears linked to a certificate of deposit indorsement. The farmer and wife were assaulted and Mr Connick is believed dead.
J U Boyer traveling representative for Huber Manufacturing Co from Marion was among the injured in the Northern Pacific wreck near Glen five days ago. He suffered a broken arm that could not be properly attended due to demand for limited surgical services. Mr Boyer spoke from Fargo on his way home, noting that most who were killed faced greater injuries.
