Mt Pleasant tragedy ends in near fatal self harm
Leslie Bird a 50 year old single man attempted suicide in his Mt Pleasant room over Drummond's drug store by cutting his wrist and shooting himself three times with a 32 calibre revolver. Found in a pool of blood after friends visited and door forced open. He received salt solution transfusion and was taken to his brother's home as doctors battle to save him continues. He is brother to H F Bird and to Mrs Bott and Mrs Woolson.

Henry Miller Indicted For Attempted Train Wreck
Henry Miller was indicted by the Washington county grand jury for attempting to wreck a Burlington passenger train on the Burlington Des Moines line near Coppock. The incident involved a plank placed across the rails two months earlier. no injuries occurred though engineers were frightened. W. H. Iowa butter contracts issued to butter makers
Iowa butter makers won all contracts for 138 tons of butter bought by the state board of control for institutions, totaling about 80 000 dollars for six months. Big Woodmen Picnic in Hillsboro Iowa
A large crowd attended the Woodmen picnic in Hillsboro on September 20 with delegations from Bonaparte Stockport Rome and Salem. Morning events included declamations music and a Royal Neighbors drill. After dinner log rolling log chopping and log splitting entertained briefly followed by a tug of war. Speaker Mr Stevens arrived overland after missing his Fort Madison train. The event was well received and considered one of the best Woodmen picnics yet.
