William Hughes and John O'Brien, two miners, built a twelve foot boat and voyaged from Wind River through the Big Horn canyon into the Yellowstone. They faced deafening rapids, 500 foot limestone walls, and near starvation before reaching the Big Horn valley and Fort C. F. Smith.
