Election tax gain aids Central Railroad of Iowa

The township containing Ottumwa approves a tax by seven hundred to aid in building an independent line. Des Moines Valley road now reaches Ottumwa after running sixteen miles into the township. Several other short items note a Burlington fire, Orchard City Mills loss, and related costs.

Miners Brave Big Horn Canyon Voyage Through Narrow Gorge

William Hughes and John O'Brien, two miners, built a twelve foot boat and voyaged from Wind River through the Big Horn canyon into the Yellowstone. They faced deafening rapids, 500 foot limestone walls, and near starvation before reaching the Big Horn valley and Fort C. F. Smith.

Remarkable Revival of a Savannah Man Declared Dead

In Savannah's Old Fort precinct the community learned that John Dixon a colored man on Arnold Street who died Sunday morning was mysteriously revived about 11 PM the same day. Rev Gadsden led a prayer. Dixon sat up waked, then walked away prompting a panicked scene among mourners and a hasty rethinking of his death.

Iowa State Fair opens with grand displays and crowds

The 26th Iowa State Agricultural Society exhibition begins in Des Moines on September 1 with ideal weather and record first-day attendance. Facilities include five halls for art, floral displays, vegetables, mechanical exhibits and power, extensive animal pens, and a grand amphitheater. The second day draws 12,000 to 15,000 visitors as premium lists and races unfold.
