A 10 year old boy from the Amos Humphrey family near Lenox Iowa was shot in the jaw when a playmate pointed a rifle at him and pulled the trigger. The gun was not supposed to be loaded, and the accident is treated as serious and dangerous.
Charles Wiskow, sought by Waterloo police, attempted suicide with a razor after police arrested him. He was allowed upstairs for his coat and did not return, found bleeding in a pool of blood. Authorities believe he will recover.
A Wednesday night concert by the 168th Regimental band at Chautauqua park drew a large audience and strong applause. Highlights included the William Tell overture Faust selections and Franklin Fox's The Toreador's Song and encore When You and I Were Young Maggie. The band then played at a dance at the Armory with about 75 couples attending, under American Legion post auspices.
Thirty nine children and grandchildren gathered to honor Mrs. James Liblin on her 77th birthday. The day featured social visiting and warm congratulations from family members including James Liblin, G B Parsons, Sam Jerrel and others from Richland Glasgow Wooster and Peoria Ill.
An Abingdon citizen reports in the Tribune that the boys and girls Sunday school class contest is progressing, with the girls gaining ground as married women and children join the ladies’ class. The boys fear the small children may start the trend.

Neat invitations were issued by Mgr and Mrs Charles Karbritton for their golden wedding anniversary observance on Friday September 17 at the home of their daughter Mrs James S Cowen in Packwood. Also note a Cedar Rapids item about two children arrested for shoplifting from a department store.
Fairfield Ad club hosted about fifteen guests from the Washington Ad club at the Community club rooms. The evening featured a dinner and talks by I. Rothschild of Washington, Editor Appleby of the Washington Democrat, Follette of the Washington Ford agency and Washington Ad club President Henderson.
The Tribune delayed until Saturday after noon due to a gas shortage that halted typesetting. The paper reports the gas company offered no timely remedy and that the Tribune will operate independently of gas supply going forward.

The Farmers Educational and Cooperative Union of Jefferson county holds its third annual picnic at Fairfield on Saturday September 4. The parade forms on South Main at 10 am led by Unkrichs band. The program includes music readings and addresses with prizes for floats and decorated cars. A 4:30 pm baseball game features Elm Grove versus Salina locals at Parsons campus.
