The September quarter shows 805 patients at Independence and 715 at Mt. Pleasant, totaling 1,520 inmates. Costs were 35,410 and 30,058 dollars respectively, overall 63,868 dollars, equating to 13.58 dollars per month per Independence inmate and 14.01 dollars per Mt. Pleasant inmate.

Peter Luth, a farmer from near Dunlap Iowa, killed W. W. Lynch at 12253 South Thirteenth Street Omaha after a confrontation over Luth's wife. Lynch, a carpenter, disputed Luth's claim on his wife and a struggle ensued with a revolver and a chisel. Luth claims jealousy drove him to murder. Lynch died on the back yard ground after wounds to breast and face. Mrs Luth and her son were witnesses, while Luth was jailed at the central station.
Mayor Roone orders police to silence George Francis Train after reports of anarchist lectures. Train reportedly left Chicago for a southwest lecturing tour. no talk occurred on the 18th. Minnie DeMorse of Manistee confesses to poisoning cows and setting fires to avoid milking, and smothering a baby in custody dispute. Cholera epidemic closes Merida port. no new deaths in New York quarantine. Mutiny of Chinese soldiers results in officer killings, seizure of government funds, and panic at the commander's headquarters.
A Chatsworth type railroad horror struck near Kouts station on the Chicago & Atlantic line. Seventeen passengers were killed and many injured when a heavy freight wrecked into the sleeping car of the New York express. Reports describe multiple fatalities and widespread carnage with bodies burned, identification hard, and the Perry family among the victims.
A Union Square rally to ratify the State ticket of the Progressive Labor Party led to a police clash after gas jets failed to light and a platform dispute. Police attacked portions of the crowd as speakers denounced authorities. order was restored and the meeting adjourned. Meanwhile in Romania, seven of twelve peasants attempting to kill wolves were devoured, leaving five wounded.
In Dexter Maine October 13 opinion splits over whether cashier Barron killed himself or was murdered. Supporters of suicide cite Stair confession while Barron backers call revelations vindicating the dead man. Stair and Cromwell arrived with officers as excitement grows with sightings of strangers near the crime scene. Bancor Maine October 13 Don Andrews, named in Stair's confession, arrested in connection with the Dexter murder and bank robbery.
John B. Owens, linked to the Pacific Express heist on the Iron Mountain route, has been arrested in Chicago and reportedly confessed to taking the money but cannot account for its fate. He was described as drunk or crazy at the time. The loot, about 34,600 dollars, was sent in several packages to Texas destinations. identities of the consignors remain unknown.
