William Tool, a life prisoner at Anamosa for first degree murder, has notified the governor of his intent to ask for a pardon. He has twice before applied for release. He allegedly killed his wife in a religious frenzy after she refused to join his church.
Daniel Francis of East Des Moines offers $30,000 for a home for aged and infirm Methodist ministers if the conference raises an equal amount. An attempt to secure the other $30,000 from J. D. Rockefeller is noted, with Des Moines seen as a promising approach.
Mrs. Fred Kicks, wife of a Farmington merchant, died at her home Monday after taking headache medicine for relief. A week earlier she had dinner at her father's house, then returned home and became ill with a headache before being found unconscious by her husband and passing away the same day.
Capt. F H Delano of the United States Marine Corps plans to open a recruiting office in Cedar Rapids within three to four weeks. The federal building will host the office with a sergeant and corporal in charge, Delano stationed in Des Moines and overseeing ten Iowa recruiting stations. Vernon Williams, 4, of Glenwood, shot in the face by an accidental discharge, remains under doctor care after the incident at a neighbor's house. A wagon accident near Halfa kills two year old son of B Nelson. Henry Short, 9, fatally injured in a cane mill accident near Newton. Mercy Hospital at Webster City may reopen if the town guarantees moral and financial support. a church conference appointed a committee to secure the assurances.
Iowa fire insurance interests will make no concerted effort to influence the coming session. The assembly will be without a fire insurance lobby this winter, as authorities cite grounds for the change. George L. Dobson resigns as consul at Hanshaw, China, reflecting mixed views of China.
The Carnegie library proposal for Spirit Lake will not be built because the town cannot raise the required $600 per year through taxation due to its small size.
Mrs. George R Griswold of Des Moines and her daughters plan to move to their old home in Omaha. She is the widow of the man murdered and his body cast into the river, and the crime’s memories are too painful to stay in Des Moines. The move will occur once business affairs in Des Moines are settled.
George Milner captain and Ralph Heilman athletics manager with two others are expelled after hazing a freshman at Morning Side College in Sioux City. The football team goes on strike and about five hundred students mutiny as upperclassmen force a freshman on a watermelon hunt and stage a fake death with blank cartridges. The frightened freshman is taken to the police and charged with murder.
The state census shows Monroe county has the largest percentage of negroes of any county in Iowa. In that bailiwick they are recorded as a significant demographic group.
Crail's restaurant on Midway draws crowds with a $500 peanut and popcorn wagon powered by a complete steam engine and boiler. Peanuts roasted to perfection and popcorn popped in a motherly style delight diners nightly, showcasing progress and enterprise at the popular eating house.
The Burlington route plans a hard dirt roads special with industrial commissioner W H Manss in charge and Dean Ward King as speaker. It will run on Burlington lines with a Saturday October 28 appearance in Fairfield.
