Pittsburg Exposition Buildings Destroyed By Fire

A vast fire in Pittsnune destroys a north bank exposition complex adjoining the Allegheny. The blaze began in the boiler room and swept through Floral Hall and Machinery Hall, consuming the Main Building. Losses are estimated around 1,000,000 with insured value ~150,000 and exhibits totaling about 800,000, including the Arabian locomotive and a cash stash of 36,000.

Tall Townsand Chimney at Port Dundas Glasgow Tallest in World

The Townsand chimney in Port Dundas Glasgow stands as one of the world’s tallest with a foundation to coping height of 468 feet and summit 45 feet above ground. Its outside foundation diameter is 50 feet narrowing to 12 feet 8 inches at the coping top. Brickwork totals 1,400,000 bricks weighing about 7,000 tons, including 1,142,52 common bricks and 57,468 inner cone and fire bricks.
