Early returns show Democrats poised to control the next House by a 40 to 50 seat margin and win majorities in several states. Reported results from Indianapolis and several counties indicate a close race with Harrison leading in city totals and Cleveland gaining in suburban precincts. Republican gains appear in Fulton Randolph and Vigo counties, while Tribune predicts Indiana leaning Democratic as votes continue to be tallied.
In Trenton at 11 p.m. Cleveland leads with about 18 200 votes and Clarri son 10 400 as New Jersey polls show heavy turnout. Cleveland held a 7 149 plurality in ISSS while the Reading combine bill influenced results. Voters from both parties largely stuck to straight tickets, though governor and other races showed mixed support and unusual scratching.
Milwaukee county results split GOP and Democratic gains with Harrison and Peck leading in several towns. Madison dispatch reports Cleveland carries Wisconsin by about 10 thousand with Gov Peek likely re elected and Democrats winning most Congressional districts and both legislative houses.
Meagre dispatches across Missouri indicate a Democratic gain of about 25 percent over Issa. The tally suggests Cleveland leading by 80 000 to 35 000 and Stone the Democrat ahead by 17 000 for governor. In St Louis 208 precincts report Cleveland 5 520 Harrison 5 102 Stone 5 383 Weaver 5 290.
Kansas observers report strong votes for the Weaver fusion ticket statewide, with clear gains across the state. The Republican slate is still seen as winning the state ticket, but four of seven fusion candidates are favored for Congress.
Republicans claim a 15000 plurality in Iowa but Democrats have not conceded. little reliable word on congressman, with Democrats certain only of Hayes in the second district. Continued on page 4.
