Farmington Hit Hard by Cloudburst Flooding

Farmington Iowa reports a severe cloudburst last night with nearly a foot of rain from 7:30 to 10:30. Cellars flooded and crops damaged while country roads bridges and culverts suffered. Rock Island line between Farmington and Croton washed out almost the entire distance halting trains. Ottumwa trains reach Bonaparte and return north.

In Oelwein Iowa May 25 Charles Ward trailed his friend Thomas McGuire for an hour fearing a self inflicted death. McGuire aged 34 drew a pistol from his pocket and fired twice killing himself near Hawkeye. Ward arrived too late to intervene and Coroner J J Cole held an inquest.

Murray Iowa May 25 John Watson a farmer eight miles southwest of Murray was thrown from a wagon while helping break a colt. He sustained a fractured ankle in the mishap occurring last evening, with his injuries reportedly serious.

Hopkinton Iowa May 24 Lloyd Huggins three year old son of Mr and Mrs Mel Huggins living west of town was burned to death on the farm. His clothing caught fire near a brush pile and before aid could reach him he fell into glowing coals dying several hours later in terrible agony.

His body lay hidden until a rowboat pair spotted it later. He is son of Patrick Nevins who a year earlier was found burned to death in his cottage in a presumed robbery murder.

High School Girl Elopes in Rock Island Affair

Miss Josephine Ostrander a 17 year old junior at Muscatine High School eloped to Rock Island with Walter Harrington also 17 and married there. They planned a secret until January after her graduation, but the license appeared in a Rock Island paper revealing the union. The girl is noted as among the prettiest and most popular in her school and classmates reacted with consternation.

Fraser Citizens In Running Fight Over Barber Shop Clash

In Fraser Boone County May 24 a barber shop duel between William Coleman and Elkhorn Billy Phipps ended with assault and battery charges. Coleman struck Phipps with a hook and Phipps drew a knife, prompting a chase through Fraser. A shovel enabled Coleman to strike at Phipps neck, but bystanders intervened and the fight was declared a draw. Both men later made peace.
