A Des Moines financier writes that many young men fail by risky speculation and lack of purpose. He advises starting with small, paid property investments, paying cash as possible, securing mortgages, and using extra income to retire notes. Gradually, disciplined saving leads to substantial, self acquired property.
Des Moines reports that railroads will not oppose Iowa two cent passenger law but will challenge agent fare laws in Arkansas Missouri and Nebraska. They plan a fair trial of the Iowa law set to take effect July 4 to test its impact on passenger business while new schedules are prepared in Chicago. In other notes a court hears a demurrer over a teacher Buckley case involving a district school board.
Sigourney Iowa May 3 A brick yard accident at Delta left Dave MacLaren What Cheer la dying from injuries after falling from the top of a fifty foot chimney while laying brick. The fall paralyzed his lower body and witnesses rushed to aid him. He is about forty and well known.
Des Moines Iowa May 6 weather bureau officials confirm April was the coldest since the bureau began 29 years ago with a mean temperature of 42 degrees. It is two degrees colder than April 1881, and 5 degrees below the long term average of 50. April was dry as well with 1.48 inches of rainfall versus a 2.95 inch average.
Engineer William Cahill of the Davenport Rock Island Northwestern road is in critical condition at St Luke's hospital after an extra freight train bumped his engine at Le Claire. He was thrown head first from the cab, struck the engine corner, and suffered a crushed skull with brain injury. He remains unconscious.
Mr and Mrs Hugh Taylor visiting from Portland Oregon narrowly escaped death when a folding bed collapsed in Créston Iowa. They were trapped for about thirty minutes before help arrived, as rescuers pulled them to safety with their lives at risk. Their farming interests in the county were noted.
Council Bluffs Iowa May 6. F C Johnson a wealthy farmer near Bentley was sued for 5000 dollars in damages by Miss Nellie Buckley a school teacher. The case involves a director claiming privilege in a dispute over alleged harm or slander.
T H Cunningham files a damages suit against Chicago Burlington & Quincy and Chicago Rock Island Pacific claiming 67 calves loaded at Fort Madison in March were lost between Fort Madison and Burlington. He says the car was rotten and dilapidated causing calves to fall from cracks and be pinched between sides and bottom.
Fort Dodge Iowa May 6 John Nelson nearly slept on the tracks when Officer Schumaker spotted him stretched across the rails on the Chicago Great Western main line. Nelson had drank heavily and collapsed just before the train approached. the officer pulled him to safety moments before impact.
After eight hours the jury found Henry E. Hollen, county supervisor, guilty of maladministration and dismissed him from office. Evidence showed Hollen charged for work in multiple county locations on the same day, making it impossible to be at more than one place at a time. He has long been a prominent local political figure. Criminal proceedings may follow.
Mrs C E Herman wife of a Lincoln township farmer was thrown from a fast moving auto when a wheel came off in Mason City Iowa May 6. She was badly injured and may not recover while en route home with her husband the wheel failure hurled occupants a considerable distance.
Charles Zimmerman a monomaniac was arrested in Dubuque after escaping Independence asylum two years earlier. He had a history of cutting telegraph and telephone wires and claimed the buzzing lines disturbed his rest. Police report he evaded detectives for years and caused thousands of dollars in property damage.
Waterloo Iowa May 6 Mandamus proceedings have been started to force the Waterloo Cedar Falls Northern railway to improve service and equipment. Cars lack frequency proper fenders signal lights are inadequate heating windows broken track out of repair and power plant deficient.
Ottumwa Iowa May 3 a bold attempt to break free from the Wapello county jail was stopped by Mrs W W Jackson wife of the sheriff She spotted disturbed wall paneling in the jail kitchen and a tunneled corridor behind it that would have allowed escape, but the plan was foiled.
Ruth Garrison, an eighteen month old of Des Moines, Iowa, reportedly died three times from diphtheria during a ten day period. Surgeries and stimulants revived her each time, with her parents and doctors certain she had died.
Alfred Cohen a New York salesman at Thorick Horick clashes with two Ballingall hotel maids Barbara Gillispie and Nan Hodge after alleged insult over a waist replica from Cohen samples. The fight ends with the maids victorious and Cohen leaving town bearing injuries.
Waterloo Iowa May 5 government agent seeks to cancel Rev George KE Scott’s pension after his 1906 elopement with a sixteen year old congregation member. Scott has lived in Low a Falls since leaving the Independence asylum amid rumors of misconduct and his army disability.
A fossilized lower right canine from an ancient hippopotamus was found in the West Nishnabatona sands of Pottawatamie County near Council Bluffs. Iowa City geologist Dr. Samuel Calvin and Iowa University curator G C Nutting identified it as a genuine hippo tooth, confirming long ago hippos in North America.
Frank Bohnenick, a night clerk at the North McGregor hotel, is jailed in Elkader on three counts of forging $100 notes. He spent nearly all but $100 after arrest by Sheriff Dittmer. Ostinger, another Clayton County youth, is accused of stealing an engagement ring and clothes from W. J. Clark of Grand River Township. Both await the September grand jury.
An unknown man described as insane created a scare near Grant City Indiana on May 6. While Fay Lee on horseback rode by he sprang from a ditch and fired at the rider. A posse searched the area but found no trace of the shooter.
Chariton Iowa May 6 Helen Tansey girl daughter of Mr and Mrs A B Tansey suffered severe burns when her clothing caught fire while playing near a bonfire A neighbor and a physician treated the injuries on her thigh and back doctors do not expect the burns to prove fatal
The order increasing rural carrier salaries from 720 to 900 dollars raises the Iowa rural carrier fund by about 500000 annually. Des Moines office handled disbursements of 1644879 last year. 2307 rural carriers exist in the state. City carrier pay up 77359 yearly. clerks up 9900.
Mrs. Elmer Young was assaulted by a holdup man near a railroad viaduct as she returned from a shopping errand. She fought free, fled a block, and escaped without losing her purse despite clothing damage and a dark 9 pm setting.
Oskaloosa Iowa May 6 Penn college announced at the corner stone ceremonies for the new gymnasium that a girls dormitory will be built this summer. The total value of improvements will reach $50,000.
Ottumwa Iowa May 6. Dr F E Lowry reports hydrophobia among livestock near County Line. He was called to Jack Knight's farm four miles northeast of Eldon to examine animals with a history of illness and death. He confirmed rabies as the cause of the outbreak.
