Conference of democratic free silver men called for Des Moines on Thursday June 6. F Q Stuart of the Chariton Democrat appears to be responsible. The group claims sufficient votes to win the presidential election and Congress but must unite the voters.
Delegates chosen to the state convention met last Saturday to discuss the currency question and declared in favor of free silver. The Cook County gathering was poorly attended.
Sam Allerton, former Republican mayoral candidate for Chicago, says the present administration must issue bonds to gain gold, and that if Benjamin Harrison had been elected he would have faced the same need, though Democrats are blamed for current conditions.
The Des Moines Leader reports 1,500 employees of the Stater Woolen Company of Massachusetts receiving wage hikes amid debates on protectionism versus free trade. The editorial notes lower wool prices, expanding markets, and strengthening industry alongside rising wages.
The New York Sun argues that if the U S should adopt free silver coinage the silver dollar would remain a dollar but would represent silver, not gold, offering no extra purchasing power.
