The mission aims to collect scientific data and circumnavigate the continent.
Following the death of the junior member of Leggett and McKemey, Simmons and Ross succeed to the business. Leggett and McKemey, over forty years established, included Hon. C D Leggett and the late J S McKenney. Simmons and Ross, as Simmons and Ross, will carry on the firm with long city residence and noted professional success.
The Fairbanks scales awarded by the Tuberculosis committee to the top Red Cross Christmas Seals per pupil are at the Jefferson County hospital. The January issue recalls Governor Cyrus C. Carpenter dispatching Olmsted Zouaves and Crocker Veteran Guards after Council Bluffs citizens warned a prize fight would occur. In Elmerville New York cartman Jay Coote finds his bay mule stuck by a frozen tail. The tail was embedded in snow due to factory exhaust melting nearby slush. After half an hour and an ax the tail is freed and the mule stands.
The College Dramatic club will stage The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde next Tuesday night. A nine member cast, chosen from thirty seven contestants, promises lively humor as the club continues its tradition of high class dramatic work on the college stage.
Chas A Jones became sole owner of Fairfield Ice and Cold Storage at year start and began a plant overhaul. New motors and machinery boost capacity to about 25 tons daily with 175 horsepower, using Frick ammonia brine system to produce pure hard ice. The company sold over 175000 dollars in flour and feed last year and sells its coal yard opposite Eclipse yard to Farmers Union for a new warehouse.
Iowa Shorthorn breeders host an exhibition and sale at the state fair grounds from March 8 to 10. March 8 features about 200 head on display while March 9 and 10 are sale days. A. R. Corey notes it marks the first big spring Shorthorn sale at the fair grounds.
Professor Allan Bacon of Parsons College piano and organ dept gave a piano lecture recital at Barhydt Chapel at 3 30 p m on Wednesday as part of a March series. He explained Schumann and the ultra modern school with Debussy Ch six Scott and Cyril Scott numbers and Ly Sz Liszt concluding with Saint Saens Beethoven and Liszt works. The program drew a good crowd despite rain and promises two more recitals next Wednesdays.
The Fairfield Building company formed to construct homes for workingmen in Fairfield has completed organization and 100000 of 200000 capital stock has been secured. Work on buildings will start soon. Officers named include President R B Louden Vice President Fred L Hunt Treasurer W H Bangs and temporary Secretary Hughes. J. E. Main a 16 year old boy fell thirty feet from an ice chute in Waterloo and lay in a suspended state for about half an hour before trying to stand. He collapsed again and was unconscious for several hours but is expected to recover.
Robert Frost, 60, of Brooklyn, told surgeons in New York that he was tired of waiting for a railroad train, slashed his wrist after being found in a snowbank, and was removed to a hospital. He planned to jump before a train but will recover.
A 1919 Iowa State College survey of 312 farms found 100 pounds of pork cost 16.30 dollars to produce and sold for 14.50 dollars. Feed, labor, and pasture costs drive the loss of about 1.60 dollars per 100 pounds, though hogs remain profitable over years with proper accounting and market strategy.
Edward J. Vereen of Moultrie Georgia defended Swift & Co before the house agriculture committee denying the FTC charge that the firm bought a small packing plant. He said Swift & Co did not try to buy the plant but was invited to develop a larger packing operation to aid general agricultural development in southern Georgia.
Mrs Lillie Cleary in Glidden reports ten hens laying 181 eggs in January and 175 in February. The flock, housed in a piano box and fed with no patent rations, averaged 181-10 and 17 percent eggs per day respectively.
Gov. Edward J. Edwards of New Jersey, a democratic presidential hopeful on a wet platform, filed his petition with Illinois Secretary of State Emmerson. The document lists 4 076 signatures, mostly from Cook County, marking him as the first Democratic candidate to file in Illinois.
