A court house gathering is planned for Thursday evening at 7 30 to form a Jefferson county Democratic Club with a business tone and little speechmaking. The notice invites all Democrats and those favoring cheap blankets and coats over cheap whiskey to participate.
The June 7 1888 meeting of the Board examined township assessors books to equalize valuations with 5 to 15 percent adjustments in Walnut and Penn townships. It approved paying 75 percent of sheep damages from the domestic animal fund to named claimants and adjourned to 9 a.m. next day.
A secretary from the Des Moines Commercial Exchange urges residents to buy Iowa made products to boost state manufacturing. He argues Iowa pays wealth eastward via insurance, clothing, and implements and would gain trillions in prosperity if all Iowa buyers favored local firms and jobbers, with Des Moines and Dubuque examples.
The advertisement touts Papillon Skin Cure as a revolutionary treatment for eczema salt rheum erysipelas and other skin diseases with testimonials from O P Algier of Hartford Ohio who was cured after five years of battling eczema. On Friday June 1888 the board met with all members present. It abated taxes for T C Campbell due to 1885 assessment error and released John Dole and James Welday from certain assessments. The board declined two requests for further releases due to lack of power. The county attorney's salary was fixed at 700. A highway petition by Glotfelty was granted and funded, with bridge and pauper funds allocated. Mileage and per diem approved for Horn and Cassel.
Mr C L Morris of Newark Arkansas says he was incurable with lung disease but after using Dr King's New Discovery for Consumption he recovered enough to oversee his farm work and is now on his third bottle.
