Delegates convened yesterday to choose a temporary chair. Senator Kern of Indiana declined the nomination and William Jennings Bryan emerged as a candidate, with Bryan favored to lead the gathering in its early stages.
Mr. Bryan with his brother Charles and two friends left for the convention hall just before noon. To avoid a crush, they were escorted to the basement via a private service elevator and then to the hall by automobile. Officials said nothing about the temporary chairmanship as plans could change on the floor.
A man slipped into a convention hall through a side entrance and reached the platform unseen by the crowd. He shook hands with Cardinal Gibbons who waited to deliver the opening invocation.
By a 21 to 6 vote the Indiana delegation endorsed Judge Parker for temporary chairman of the national convention. Two members were absent and one declined to vote after a two hour session in which Senator Kern attended part of the meeting.
Chairman Mack directed the reading of temporary officers. The first named was Alton B. Parker of New York as temporary chairman. William J. Bryan rose to the platform and was greeted with immense cheering.
Cardinal Gibbons delivered the opening invocation wearing brilliant scarlet robes as the assembly stood in reverent silence with bowed heads.
Bryan stood in the center of the platform as wave after wave of tumultuous cheering swept the hall. He motioned for silence, but the cheers persisted.
Bryan secured approval to place Senator Kern of Indiana in nomination for temporary chairman. Delegates rose with cheers and waved hats as the nomination was announced.
Bryan spoke slowly amid tumultuous cheering declaring his three campaigns as champion of Democratic principles and tallying six and one-half million Democratic votes. He asked if anyone sought harmony more, receiving a chorus of No from the hall.

Bryan finished his remarks at 1 28 p m to a roaring crowd after delivering a forty minute speech.
Senator Kern took the platform as Bryan closed and was mildly cheered. The moment captured a subdued reaction from the audience amid the campaign event.
Kern stated he wished to take no action that would prejudice Indiana's candidate for the presidency, Governor Marshall, signaling careful public stance amid the race.
