Residents are left puzzled by his sudden disappearance and the unresolved wedding plans.
The Rev Billy Sunday, after speaking in Des Moines and conducting a revival in Knoxville, donned a baseball uniform to play center field, the position he held with Pop Anson's champions. His Company B Iowa National Guard team will face business men, as Sunday has converted over half the company to his side.
Waterloo Iowa June 7 Mrs Frank Nisus a German woman about six ty five years of age was found hanging from a tree in her yard near Gilbertville today It is thought to be death by own action as the woman had been ill and despondent for some time She leaves a husband and a family of grown children.
The Howard Hopping home southwest of Washington was destroyed by a Wednesday afternoon fire traced to a faulty flue. Neighbors attempted rescue but were unsuccessful.
Horace Hamilton, an African American man, was shot in the railroad yards of Muscatine Iowa by unknown tramps while trying to board a train. The bullet entered his nose and exited through the mouth. he is expected to recover as the assailants fled the scene.
Ebbe Jacobson a 15 year old Woodward student, once the most popular girl, killed herself with rat poison over not matching peers in dress. She lingered after ingestion, confided to her mother, and died amid family strain and local turmoil. Ralph Jacobson is the family’s sole breadwinner. a Des Moines relative attended the funeral. This marks Woodward’s first suicide.
Ottumwa Iowa June 7 two St Marys church acolytes Masters Donald Madden and John Fagan barred the door with a rope after nuptial mass and demanded a tip from groom Anthony Walsh of Burlington. The groom paid and the rope was released. The acolytes have formed an acolytes union to “touch” every groom at the altar.
President Huber of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, based in Indianapolis, arrived in Dubuque after a planned Sunday address at a picnic was delayed. The visit's purpose is unclear, with speculation he might replace General Organizer Fuelle in the wood workers strike leadership. Developments were expected as boycott enforcement against mills hiring nonunion workers was to begin tomorrow by the employing teamsters.
Farmington Iowa June 6 stockman Will Boyer bought a horse said to be sold by E S Welpton who claimed to have bought it from his mother. Boyer paid 125 dollars and kept the horse at his farm west of town until J C Welpton appeared in town claiming the animal. He proved ownership and nature of sale.
A man states the theft was committed by his brother E S Welpton and Boyer surrendered the animal. Authorities plan to pursue the thief as efforts continue to capture him.
Dubuque will host the annual G. A. R. state encampment next week starting Tuesday. A fifty‑piece drum corps of Civil War musicians, Town Hornets Nest Brigade reunion, ex‑prisoners of war gathering, and large contingents from Sons of Veterans and Spanish‑American War Veterans are expected. War Taft and Governor Cummins will attend among other notable figures. Excursions on the Mississippi and campus events supplement a week of campfires and entertainments as city homes open to visitors.
Ottumwa 1907 graduates, 57 seniors, received diplomas at Grand Opera House. Dr Edwin Steiner of Grinnell College gave the address. The class has donated 559 dollars from its class play profits to the Ottumwa board of education to establish a manual training department, a project long delayed by lack of funds. The board accepted the gift for that purpose.
Nearly 1000 fans in Knoxville watched Billy Sunday, former ball player and evangelist, star in a 19 to 13 victory. He made spectacular catches in center field, a two bagger and a single, proving his old form. Receipts near 200 dollars benefit the Anderson Martin poor fund.
