Old Rivalry Over Mississippi Bridge Shapes River Policy
The clash between river interests and railroads over Rock Island Mississippi bridge spanned battles in courts and public opinion. The Effie Afton steamboat struck the structure, causing a month long closure, with Abraham Lincoln among bridge company counsel. Railroads ultimately won, and river crossing by bridge became standard. Fraternal societies report over one million members annually through the National Fraternity Congress of America and ninety three member organizations.
