Parole board recommends full pardon for Dr J W Crofford
Des Moines July 23. After four years in Fort Madison for the death of Miss Maude Stone at his sanitarium the board of parole recommends a full pardon for Dr J W Crofford. Dr Artemus Brown testified Miss Stone asked him to be her physician and admitted a criminal operation occurred but Brown refused to treat unless another doctor was present. The case drew wide attention due to Stone's prominence in southern Iowa.

Mad Soldier Slays Family After Separation
In Morelia Mexico on July 22 Sergeant Melquiades Saens of the Fifth Infantry killed his wife and child with a sword after she refused to return. He then killed the wife’s mother and sister when they rushed in. Saens went mad at the sight of blood and used the same weapon on himself.

Death of Mrs. Gertrude James After Prolonged Illness
Mrs. Gertrude Rasmus James died July 26 1909 at her parents home after months of tuberculosis. She was born August 20 1875 in the city and married Emery James in 1898. Four children Carl Fred Fay Dora survive along with her parents two brothers Harry and Frank and sister Mrs Dora Franklin. Funeral services were held at the Rasmus home and burial followed at Evergreen cemetery.
