White defeats Drake as headlines praise the Alaska gold discoveries. The Dingley bill passes Congress and is signed by the president. McFarland and Drake tumble in the same week. The nation watches Alaska with growing excitement and an anticipated spring exodus of tens of thousands.
The Muscatine Journal notes John Mahin’s repeated appointments as postmaster and his claim that McKinley’s refusal to nominate him again erodes confidence in the administration.
The Ottumwa Courier reports letters from the city show Harlan’s friends mobilizing for a strong campaign to secure his nomination for governor. The paper indicates it will back him, calling him Iowa’s grand old man and noting many feel he deserves the nomination if he seeks it.
Remington Brothers of 309 Broadway New York open a western office in the Chamber of Commerce Building Chicago to handle rising western business. Eastern office remains at 309 Broadway. firm will continue at both locations with county seat dailies and weeklies as before.

The field for governor on the Republican ticket includes H W Byers of Harlan, James Harlan of Mt Pleasant, J B Harsh of Creston, L M Shaw of Denison, George E Roberts of Ft Dodge, J A T Hull of Des Moines, James H Rothrock of Cedar Rapids, Curtis of Des Moines, John N Irwin of Keokuk who briefly entered then withdrew, and W L Culbertson of Carroll who dropped out after a few days. Other names may enter as the campaign continues.
Allan W. Ricker resigns from the Populists regulars and joins the balters. He condemns fusion with Democrats and says the Populist ticket will be abandoned, risking removal from the official ballot. He predicts five of ten state central committee members will defect and back a ticket with wide populist support.
