Nina Kance, fifteen months old, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam T. Kance, five miles northwest of Monmouth New Jersey, fell into a lard jar with water while playing in the yard Friday afternoon. She was pulled out by an older child but could not be revived.

Iowa City July 17. The Johnson county teachers examination under County Superintendent Langenberg shows many teachers poor at orthography. Of thirty eight teachers, only Miss Laura Brown of Solon spelled the full list of twenty five words correctly. others err from one to sixteen words.

In Fort Madison Iowa on July 15 Christian Schubert a tailor discharged a pistol at his friend Giles Andrews a Washington township farmer. The bullet entered Andrews neck and the wounded man was taken to St Elizabeth hospital with the bullet not yet located amid fears of a fatal outcome.

Jessie J McElwain dies at 22 after March illness in Packwood

Jessie J McElwain was born in Jefferson county Iowa on June 4 1883 and died July 4 1905 aged 22. She married Gilbert A Smith November 24 1904 and left family friends and church workers mourning her loss after four months of illness and a funeral July 5 in the Christian church with interment at Packwood cemetery.
