First Presidential Election in County in Iowa Statehood

The Tribune presents a vivid slice of Jefferson county’s first presidential election after Iowa’s statehood in 1848. Greatest Fair in Iowa Seeks Crowds with Fowler Flights

The Jefferson County fair will host Rob ert G Fowler the first continental flight pioneer for two to three aeroplane exhibitions daily on August 8 and 9. Fowler will fly a Wright biplane in forecasts of thousands of attendees as part of the county fair attractions. He recently set a Kansas City altitude record of 3800 feet in a 25 minute ascent and 11 minute descent at Overland Park in a 20 mph wind.

Prizes Set for Good Roads Papers at Jefferson Picnic

A Good Roads picnic in Chautauqua on Saturday August 17 features contests for Jefferson county residents. Prizes total five dollars to top entries for men and boys with best papers on roads and dragging, read within twenty minutes. Judges include out of county members. Postmaster officials and state postmasters meet at Spirit Lake as part of the Iowa Great Lakes convention with speakers and entertainment planned.

Drugists Plan to Cut Down Personal Crisis Reports

In Sioux City Iowa on July 15 the Iowa Pharmaceutical association adopted a resolution at its convention deploring the mention of persons in newspaper stories about personal crises and homicides and pledging to enlist wholesale druggists to stop the practice.

Findlay Hollister Fangs Himself

Findlay Hollister a prominent farmer and poultryman north of the city was found dead by his four year old daughter last Thursday morning. He had suffered ill health for a year and had voiced dissatisfaction with life on several occasions. He rose at 5:30, completed chores, then hanged himself in the scale house. His wife and mother were distressed but had no warning of the act.
