The president sent fifteen veto messages to Congress on June 21. Six targeted the senate and nine the house, with thirteen vetoes on pension bills and two opposing public building projects for Zanesville Ohio and Sioux City Iowa. The vetoes questioned pension bill legitimacy and the need for new federal buildings, citing cost and actual federal presence.
John Miller a Beaman blacksmith aged 55 was found dead in his shop on the morning of the 18th. Hans Henck 72 died by own action June 19 at LeClaire 12 miles north of Davenport by hanging.
