News dispatches report Lieut. George Leggett of Fairfield Iowa killed in an airplane collision at San Diego California. Bodies to be returned for burial. Doolittle credited with saving his life in the other plane during flight practice.
Marjorie Roberts was named first in Fairfield High School’s declamatory tryout and will represent the school in the Big Nine League girls’ declamatory contest at Ottumwa on February 14. Judges announced a close, evenly matched field with Gardner in second and Talley third.
Fairfield’s public library and museum closed a standout year under Librarian H. M. Dysart and assistant Mrs. Clara Howlett. Reading rooms were busy with returning soldiers and patrons. 27,507 volumes stocked, 854 new books added, 142 discarded, and 127 public documents donated for preservation.
Opening of the February term of the Jefferson county district court is set for Monday February 3 Judge Seneca Cornell of Ottumwa will preside The docket is heavy with two hundred sixty four cases including sixteen divorces and multiple criminal and probate matters.
Fire at the Charles Hisel stock farm seven miles northwest of Fairfield destroyed a large 40 by 70 foot barn. Origin unknown. Loss about 5000 dollars includes 859 bushels oats 150 bushels wheat and 40 50 tons hay with partial insurance. Sale of stock planned at the farm on Saturday February 8 after the fire.
Miss Marion A. Patterson and Forrest H. Braden were married Saturday January 25 at the Broadway Presbyterian Manse in Rock Island with Rev. John Stephenson presiding. Patterson, from Fairfield and Jefferson County, taught in local schools for three years. Braden, son of California residents, attended Fairfield High School and works at Universal Tractor Company in Rock Island. Best wishes from friends follow them home.
Mrs W H T Foster formerly of Fairfield and Parsons College student Jeanette Pattison, Matron of Ballard Hall, died January 23 in a Chicago hospital after an operation. She is survived by husband and three young children.
Two marriage licenses issued this past week include A J Sharer and Phoebe A Rhodes of Des Moines, and Neal Foglesong of Ottumwa with Vera Hartman of Fairfield.
The Agriculture and Good Roads Committee of the Community Club meets this afternoon at the Armory to discuss next year bureau needs and a possible hard roads study for Iowa and other states. Board members call for a meeting next Tuesday to transact business and resolve items ahead of the February 13 banquet.

A large crowd gathered at the Methodist church for a memorial program marking William McKinley’s birthday. The church displayed national colors and portraits of McKinley Washington and Lincoln. Clifford Comingore, recently returned from France with Company M, spoke of five major battles and his wound on September 12 and Red Cross care.
The Fairfield Iowa Band auxiliary engages Severion Z Herb as conductor of the 4th Reg Band. A Russian trained musician with ICU and Innes Orchestra ties, Herb will open a studio here and teach brass wood wind and string instruments on or before March 1st.
Jefferson county and Fairfield residents will attend a Thursday meeting to debate a Jefferson county soldiers memorial and the Fairfield federal building project. J S McKennedy chairs a memorial report. site already secured for the building. Reorganization of the club and a Lutheran church dinner are planned with tickets from committee members.

N C Anstead owns a notable war trophies collection displayed in the Anstead jewelry store window. The items came from battlefields in Europe gathered by Robert Anstead, son of N C Anstead, a Unit R member, who plans to tell their stories when he returns home.
John Allen Watson son of William and Elizabeth Watson born April 8 1859 near Hillsboro Iowa spent life on farms and in county schools. He married Elizabeth Williams March 6 1879 and had nine children. He died January 19 1919 in Ft Myers Florida aged 59 years 9 months 11 days. funeral January 25 in Glasgow with Rev. Berdine.
Mrs S S Fisher died January 21 1919 seven miles southeast of Fairfield after a brief illness she was an influenza victim. Daughter Martha Gardner born March 14 1882 near Iowa Iowa married Sneden Fisher in 1899 mother of Mary and Frances. Survived by husband two children father two brothers two sisters and mother. Evergreen cemetery service January 23 at 1:00 PM.
Mrs John C Leeds aged 70 died January 26 at Marshaltown. Her body returned to Fairfield for funeral services January 29 at her sister Mrs George Horns home. Interment was in Evergreen cemetery. Born January 22 1849 near Morning Sun she married John C Leeds June 18 1872 and had two children who preceded her in death. The Leeds family lived in Fairfield about 25 years.
James LaFayette Hull born March 2, 1868 on a Douds area farm in Van Buren County Iowa. He married Mary Eveline Pool on September 4, 1888 at Keosauqua. They had fourteen children with six dying in infancy. surviving include Carrie Thomas of Fairfield and Alice Bevans of Ottumwa.
Mrs. Mary Josephine Glaze died January 24 at her daughter Edna Grove's home in Fairfield Iowa aged 74. Funeral held January 27 at her North Fourth street home conducted by Dr. H. A. Mosser with music by Cora Ball and H. A. Mosser. interment Evergreen cemetery. She was born July 1, 1844 in Sisterville West Virginia and moved to Ashley Missouri in 1857. She married Alfred M. Glaze in 1874. he died in 1880. She is survived by daughter Edna Mabel Grove, three sisters Katherine and Frances Corbitt, Eva Smith, brother Joshua Corbitt, grandson Emil Glaze Grove, and other relatives. She was a longtime Presbyterian and active in Eastern Star and the college auxiliary. earlier she taught in public schools and Watson Seminary.
Miss Lelia Lamberson and Clarence L. Hall were married Wednesday at the Christian parsonage with Rev. R. H. Polly officiating. Lamberson, long a Fairfield milliner and county teacher, now plans a farmhouse life near Eldon with Hall, a successful Wapello County farmer. They will visit New York before returning home.
Francesca Zarad, famed French soprano, will perform in the High School Auditorium next Monday and Tuesday under Parson's College. Admission is free. attendees may give to the blinded soldiers rehabilitation fund. Fairfield High School basketball remains undefeated after two decisive wins. At Muscatine Fairfield overwhelmed Muscatine 27 to 9 with Crail scoring 11 and Huddleston 2, while Scott fouled out early. Earlier at Washington Fairfield dominated 27 to 2 as Crail scored five fouls and Yount led scoring.
