Chas Carter, a high school teacher, has been seriously ill but is improving. John H. Merckens visited from Des Moines with his family. Mrs. O. H. Derry left for Ohio due to her mother's illness. O. M. Anstead returned to Illinois after visiting his brother. R. B. Louden will be away in Centerville for several days on business. W. H. Henderson returns from a ten day stay in Kentucky. Florence Freeman returns home to Hillsboro after visiting her sisters. Co Y Smith B F Barr Hubert Bell and Harry Smith were in Ottumwa. Mary Nelson of Birmingham visited. Mrs. Ed. Whitney returns from Mt. Pleasant with her parents. Miss Alice Thompson of Perlee visited Mt. Pleasant and returned home. E. F. Freeman of Tingley was in the city. William Richardson of Holdredge, Nebraska, visits and plans to return home soon. Hattie McElroy of Kansas City is due to visit for several weeks. William Louden left for a business trip east for a week or two. R. N. Morrell of the Ottumwa Packing Co. visited his brother in law H. C. Peters, the new druggist. Mrs. George Woodin of Sigourney recently visited Mrs. J. P. Manatrey. C. A. Allen of Creston has been in town. George Kennedy, employed at the steam laundry, returned to Burlington. Nellie Louden went to Centerville to take depositions. E. B. Kearns and children went to Burlington for a pleasure trip.
Mrs J M Hammer hosted a tea for a small group Tuesday evening. Miss Jessie Spencer held a crokinole party for friends Monday evening. A married group will be entertained at the Stubbs home this evening. Mrs John A Spielman plans a ladies gathering at her home Thursday evening.
Jefferson County Library Association held a stockholders meeting with W. W. Junkin as chairman and C. J. Fulton secretary. A nominating committee proposed a president and twelve directors, naming Ward Lamson as president and twelve directors. The board elected officers W. W. Junkin as vice president, Rollin J. Wilson as secretary, and J. C. Thorne as treasurer. An adjourned meeting was set for Thursday.
Humphreys Bros offer public sale services at $3.50 in Jefferson county with a guarantee of satisfaction or no pay. They warn against high charges and promote experienced former charges adapted to current times.
Robert West Alexander died suddenly at his daughter Mrs. Willis Matthews home Tuesday morning. Born September 12, 1822 in Bedford county Pennsylvania, he moved to Fairfield in 1849 with his wife Elizabeth Barnes. He was a chair maker painter and paper hanger and a Methodist. Survived by two sisters and two brothers and one daughter Mrs. Alice Matthews. Funeral at W. H. Matthews home Thursday at two p.m.
Burlington preacher Rev G B Swartz will deliver a temperance lecture at the Methodist church next Monday night. The educational talk targets young men and boys with a stereopticon shown slides. Free admission invites all to hear, with Hood sarsaparilla recommended for vigor.
