Clay Township reports a well attended annual church meeting and dinner at the Clay church. Officers elected include Deacon Max Waterhouse and Sunday school leaders. Several residents are noted visiting relatives, attending events, and a New Year wedding planned for Miss Gwendolyn Van Dyke. schools resume January 2 after vacation.
On this date in 1883 two Roas boys northwest of town killed eighty five rates at a corn crib in one day. Fred Turner and Miss Katie Caton wed at Fairfield Catholic church. John Dunlavy and Miss Fannie Miller from Round Prairie married by Rev. John W. Hackley. Sheriff Chester reports horse theft from a local storefront. Amity schoolhouse literary draws crowd with a debate on whether liquor or fashion is more harmful.
The new town of Packwood laid out with business lots 25x100 priced at 40 to 50 dollars and residence lots 50x120 at 90 to 100 dollars. Two grain elevators were planned. John H. Murphy bought the first business lot and would be the town carpenter and builder.
Capt Burgess recently reappointed postmaster was honored by twenty five local business men at a Star Dining Hall surprise party where he received a handsome cane.
Miss Emma J. Vannastrand and Benjamin L. Gossick were married on December 28 at the home of the bride's father Clark Vannastrand in Buchanan township.
Oscar Schaill of Four Corners vicinity fell while alighting a train at Fairfield and sustained a broken collarbone.
In Batavia a creamery experiment faltered while Mr and Mrs William Louden celebrated their silver wedding anniversary. Mrs Louden was born Mary Jane Pattison before marriage and both were Cedar township residents at the time of their wedding. A large company of friends attended the anniversary observance.
Clark Tracy and Miss Kittie Wilkins were married at the Wilkins home in Fairfield with Rev. Marsh officiating. The notice records a local nuptial ceremony and the officiant.
