Des Moines February 20 1923 writer L Caswell says the 40th Iowa General Assembly has achieved little so far. The recess from February 23 to March 6 ends the first half, with major tax and liquor bills pending and factional clashes ahead. Prominent visitors include Mayor Short of Sioux City amid rising political ambitions and potential gubernatorial contests.
Banks in some counties resisted taxes on liberty bonds while others paid or compromised. The Guthrie Center First National Bank fought to the state supreme court, and the decision will allow counties with unpaid or compromised taxes to collect them, relieving boards of equalization from the prior legal knot.
Parsons college hosts an annual Washington party in the Trustee Gymnasium with Colonial costumes. Mt. Pleasant Iowa resident Wm. Presnell raises Jersey Giant capons from 9 to 11 pounds each after caponizing roosters at 2% pounds. He sells them for 25 cents per pound, earning $2.25 to $2.75 per bird, cheaper than Chicago turkey market quotes. Interest grows among local farmers in caponizing.
The Tribune will publish a March 8 big Farm Bureau edition devoted to Jefferson county farming. It will feature sections on purebred stock, farm women, farming as business, boys and girls clubs, and Farm Bureau activities with H. J. Metcalf providing farm writing. Prizes offer five dollars for the best club story up to 200 words.
The Farmers Union of Libertyville held a Tuesday evening meeting despite cold weather. After business, a coon program with Courtship in Coon Creek and Dat Famous Chicken Debate drew laughs. The group features eighty six paid-up members and enjoyed the refreshments.
Harry E. Smith bought the north side square building known as the K. P. or Howard and Hunt building from Dr. T. L. James for 25000 dollars. Ground floor occupants include Gobble & Heer and W. Bevering.

Thieves broke into three Lingy businesses last Sunday night or early Monday morning and escaped with small loot. G R Black Hardware lost about $4 from the cash drawer and two tires. Steigleder & Son Lumber Yard saw eight or ten dollars stolen from the unlocked safe. Purdy's Pool Hall and Barber Shop reported a small sum taken. Bloodhounds failed to trace the trail. suspects at large.
W. J. Ralph, long-time Des Moines auto top repair operator of the Acme Auto Top Co, seeks a Fairfield site to operate a similar business. Current consideration includes space shared with Brown Motor Co.
W A Carter Civil War veteran dies at his Libertyville residence after a brief pneumonia illness. Funeral at his home with burial in a nearby cemetery. Survived by three children Clara, Emery, and Harley. his wife preceded him in death. Also notes recent thick ice harvests by People's Ice at the city water works reservoirs.
