A damaged archival letter from 1908 details a hypnotism extortion ploy aimed at editor E H R in Farmington. The writer offers mind reading and coercive schemes to extract money, promising non traceable payment and implying a violent finale. The editor declines, treating the scheme as a dangerous but unserious temptation.
The Burlington and Quincy Railroad filed suit against Chisman and G W Blair for $30 plus costs from the sale of a return ticket to Salt Lake City that was used from Salt City to St Joseph Mo. Blair is accused of taking the ticket and Chis sold it later. The ticket dated from 1905 and Blair paid $34.75. In another note L B Cremer of Hedrick Ia died after a brief illness. Funeral held with local clergy. he was a longtime business figure and horseman.
A 15-year-old boy, John tick, son of Dr. irkpatrick, suffered a severe face burn Friday morning when a coal oil fire in his father's oil vein exploded. The injury is described as painful but not serious.

Creston Iowa February 15 officers found a 32 caliber revolver in the room of Mrs Belle Taylor as the coroner's hearing into the murder of N Z Taylor looms. Mrs Taylor and one son remain in custody as witnesses while she claims the weapon was kept under her pillow for protection against burglars.
Iowa City reports progress on the university president’s new home as material delays slow construction. Officials expect occupancy by October 1 with the house cost about 18000 dollars and total appropriation of 25000 dollars covering the project.
Spencer Iowa February 14 The daughter of Mr and Mrs Schiel who was kidnapped from Minneapolis about seven years ago by her mother was found last week at the home of Mrs Martinie Proctor near Montana Proctor is the wife of a traveling evangelist The father secured custody in a divorce then the mother gained access and took the child The mother later left for Florida and gave the child to the Proctors A habeas corpus was served and the search continued with the father locating the child in California and pursuing return with the sheriff and authorities.
Judge Kelley ordered a $6,000 verdict for Dr. Bryan of Forest City against the M. & St. L. railroad after a trial away from the jury. Bryan sought $16,000 for personal injuries from a fall through a viaduct while attempting to reach aStock freight caboose near the depot. Defense attorney H. A. Brown was aided by Judge Hessel. plaintiffs were B. J. Thompson and Stenneff & Bliss.
N Zaylor a confectionery merchant was found dead in his store building apartments, a single bullet through the left jaw severing the jugular. his divorced wife was arrested, claiming innocence. a revolver with one cartridge was found in her rooms, same caliber as the bullet. no robbery suspected. motive appears personal. the couple had frequent quarrels.
Henry Day age about 73 died after a week of pneumonia at the home of his daughter Mrs Samuel McCullough in Keosauqua. He was a former president of the Iowa State Fair and a noted short horn cattle breeder. Survived by three sons and one daughter, interment in Cedar township. Brother in Keosauqua and sister Mrs Eliza Cuthbertson survive. He was a leading Keosauqua figure.
Hundreds of school children attended a funeral in Fort Dodge Iowa for a girl who died of a malignant diphtheria. The city imposes precautions and quarantine at Wakonsa school to prevent an outbreak as another child develops a dangerous case. Fear grips residents and families face anxiety over the spread from the public ceremony.
In Waterloo on February 15 a party of well drillers uncovered the remains of a mammoth tree trunk at Vinton. The trunk was several feet thick and buried about 140 feet deep, suggesting prehistoric upheaval. Traces of coal appeared in the surrounding rocks though the area is not coal bearing soil.
Fred Bernd obtains a divorce from Calista Granger-Bernd, his mail order wife married August 9 1907, after a brief courtship. He sues rival George B Van Arsdel for alienation of his wife s affections, pursuing damages from the former bank cashier who is married.
W E Fields, formerly of Wapello, Iowa, died in Monmouth Illinois after weeks of illness including tonsillitis and rheumatism followed by bowel hemorrhage. He was about 35, a former Baxter factory worker, later stationary engineer, and member of I O O F K P Masons. Funeral in Wapello, with interment in Wapello cemetery.
Des Moines judge denies injunctions sought by Mary Coggeshall and the Political Equality Club challenging the city election for a new city hall and bond sale arguing women voters were denied the right to vote. Des Moines, Ia Feb 15.
Chariton Iowa February 14 Rev M G Munn resigns as pastor of the First United Presbyterian church after nine years to accept a call from a Waterloo church. His departure marks the sixth pulpit change in Chariton with several churches installing new pastors.
Seventeen elders arrive on foot from Farmington and Burlington to Ottumwa Ia to conduct a city wide house to house canvass. They have secured a place of worship and hold lively Sunday services and Wednesday meetings. Visitors report broad local interest and favorable reception.

Muscatine Iowa February 14 William Sunday Memorial Tabernacle sign now spans the avenue end of the tabernacle at Iowa avenue and Eighth street. Owner Mr Bilkey says only religious meetings will be held inside and has planned fireproof improvements for future services.
Liquor has plagued the Hurley family with multiple fates. Luke Hurley was committed to an inebriate asylum in Knoxville this week. James Hurley was sent there months ago but has since been returned cured. John Hurley remains in an Iowa City hospital after severe frostbite from sheltering in his cabin during a harsh winter.
In Morningside College auditorium H H Gill of Epworth, president of the prohibition oratorical association, declared his oration plagiarized and refused the $25 prize. The admission leaves Morningside College in a muddle over who will represent the school at the state prohibition contest in Oska loosa on March 4.
Winterset Iowa readers learn the town ends liquor sales at four permitted drug stores after a local temperance wave. A fifth permit holder withdrawn its application and bootlegging is doubtful, marking a stricter local liquor policy.
Unpaid taxes on money values totaling 1 500 000 have been uncovered in Woodbury county by tax ferrets under Judge Ben McCoy of Oskaloosa and D B Shonts of Correctionville. The taxes target policies dating from January 1 1905 after the December 23 1904 Sioux City fire.
James F. Burns the defendant in a suit brought by James Doyle to recover Colorado mining interests has filed for a change of venue from Pottawattamie County for a third trial. He claims county residents are prejudiced and a fair trial cannot be obtained locally.
Dispatches claimed Rev Frank L Honeywell of Woodlake Minnesota had been located in Vinton Iowa with relatives in good health but thorough checks showed the report false. His mother and kin remain unaware of his whereabouts as confusion with another Rev Honeywell persists. Grain men to Sioux City.
Fort Dodge Iowa February 15 Sioux City was chosen as the site for the 1909 meeting of the Farmers Grain Dealers association of Iowa at the convention’s close yesterday afternoon.
Mrs Tamar Conner born January 7 1821 in Indiana and a pioneer of Salem died at 2 AM in her north Salem home. She helped establish the first frame house and store in Salem with her first husband George Hobson. Surviving children include Joseph and Harry of Albia Mary Parkins Fairfield Ella Cook Oregon and Rachel Gough cared for her. Funeral at Friends church Saturday at 2 PM conducted by Pastor Miss Lawrence.
John Byurns, a newlywed of one month, fired four times at his wife in their Boone cottage. The bullets missed and lodged in walls. He was arrested, examined by the insane commission, and ordered to an asylum. Investigators deem his jealousy unaccountable despite a happy courtship.
Allen Greene, a 92-year-old inmate at the county poor farm in Geneva, attempted suicide by cutting his throat with a knife. He was found weak from blood loss but likely to survive. Officials say he now regrets the act and blames temporary insanity. Greene once served as mayor of Hampton.
Fort Madison Feb 13 Daniel Walters age 82 or nearly so is likely the oldest continuous Mason in Iowa. He joined La France Fidelity lodge in Geneva Switzerland in 1846 and later settled in St Louis before moving to Fort Madison in 1852 joining Claypoole lodge No 13 A F and A M where he has remained a member. He attended meetings until a fall last year fractured ribs and now receives flowers and reminders from his Masonic brethren.
