Sudden Death of David McCracken in Iowa

David Raison McCracken died suddenly in his bed Friday morning after chest pains. Born in Armstrong County Pennsylvania in 1836, he served in Civil War units and as Iowa City mayor in the 1870s. He leaves a daughter and was mourned by Masons, veterans, and citizens.

Resolutions Honor Dr J A Kirby At Batavia Baptist Sunday School

February 7 1800 Batavia Baptist Sunday School adopted resolutions mourning Dr J A Kirby beloved cashier and leader praising his service and faith. Also notes the sudden death of Mrs Sophia Herring at Carl Hawk’s home aged 76 with burial in Richwoods cemetery and thanks to helpers. A lighthearted anecdote about a Albia youth and a riddle yielding “one hug.”

Visit to the Brookville School in Jefferson County

An observer praises Mr. McPherson at Brookville School on February 5 1800 noting orderly classes in banking and mensuration. The writer commends the Christian gentleman and scholar elevating the school and states no other Jefferson county school can surpass it. The stay lasted about three and a half hours.

New Baptist Church Opens With Valentine Supper

The new Baptist church will open Friday evening February 14 with a family supper at five cents, oysters at 25 cents a dish. All are invited to support finishing payments for the brick building that replaced the burned wooden church.

Barn Fire Destroys Cattle at McReynolds Farm

On a Wednesday night a barn at J W McReynolds farm caught fire. Inside were two Jersey cows a three year old heifer and her calf nine pigs. the old cow died after being burned and the other was badly scorched. Pigs escaped unhurt. Fire department response was reportedly delayed due to previous non summons. Loss expected to be severe for McReynolds.
