Cedar Rapids Iowa December 24 trustees extended a call to William Wilberforce Smith headmaster of the Berkley school for boys New York City to become president of Coe College. The committee chaired by Dr E R Burkhalter recommended the move and the board adopted it. Smith a Lafayette graduate and longtime educator has strong Christian ties and is now 46 years old. The salary will be set by the trustees executive committee and strong hopes exist he will accept.
Evidence in the Buck murder trial was completed yesterday. This morning the state opened its argument by E. S. Salmon. Court adjourned until Monday. defense to follow by Charles O. McLain. S. N. Haynes of Knoxville will close for the state. Case then goes to the jury.
In Carroll Iowa on December 24 the Dedham Savings Bank denied rumors it was closed due to a petition seeking attachment against President J G Caton for 18000 dollars. The matter was settled amicably and the bank remains strong with ample capital and smooth operations.
William Johnson a 35 year old farmer living two miles south of Douds Iowa was found in his barn with a bullet wound to the left temple. He died an hour later despite efforts to save him. A 22 caliber target rifle was used at the Horn farm where he resided. Johnson leaves a widow seven children and was brother to ex Sheriff Frank Johnson of Keosauqua. Despondency over ill health and finances is given as a motive.
The 14 month old son of Mr and Mrs C Johnson of Jackson was fatally scalded by hot water Tuesday. Funeral held at Jordan Church and burial in Ontario cemetery. The child pulled a tablecloth corner causing a table cover to pull away and spill a pan of hot water onto the child.
In Washington township, the Elias Nelson farm changed hands for the first time since entering from the government fifty one years ago. Elias Nelson, the homesteader, received $1.25 per acre while the heirs sold the farm for $65.
Ottumwa Democrat of Ottumwa Iowa suspended publication today due to a lack of working capital and patronage. The paper, revived on March 18 1903 after an eleven month shutdown, was led by S A Brewster a silver Bryan Parker organ. Brewster will move to Joliet Illinois to manage a newspaper.
In Oskaloosa Iowa John Martin shot and killed Arthur Lynch over a disputed business matter. Lynch died shortly after at the saw mill where the men were alone. Deputy Sheriff Moore transported Martin to jail in Oskaloosa for a preliminary hearing. Cracker's Neck, famed for historic crimes, witnessed the latest tragedy.
Lincoln Neb Dec 23 William J Bryan attacks the coal trust in his paper criticizing a 23 cent coal advance. He says the trust robs miners and the public and defies law, boasting it fears neither Washington nor Pennsylvania's government.
Ames Iowa December 24 Citizens prepare for a mass meeting to discuss the school troubles that cost the superintendent and teaching staff. The school board delayed resignation of Professor Scroggie and stated both Scroggie and Lee acted in good faith. The meeting is expected to decide on the next steps to settle the dispute.
The board weighs a unanimous auction endorsement favoring Mr Scroggie and hopes this may persuade him to reconsider his prior determination.
The Iowa State Manufacturers' Association plans a Cedar Rapids gathering January 24–26 promoting Iowa made goods and aiming to influence national policy on interstate commerce. Speakers include William Larrabee, Geo Ball, Jud Welliver, and others. exhibit space is donated, with a projected $50,000 state fair exhibit appropriation and proposed Iowa mutual insurance study.
E. D. Thomas sued the town of Sigourney Iowa after he fell on an icy sidewalk and had earlier undergone a lower limb amputation. The court directed the jury to verdict for the town after evidence was presented, ending the case with the plaintiff losing.
Sigourney Iowa December 24 Charles Hickman pled guilty in county court this morning for stealing the Schwenke horses. Judge Scott fixed Saturday at 9 o clock for sentencing.
