The Oyster Cultivation Debate in American Waters

The Johns Hopkins Summers school report notes that American oysters require different propagation methods from European practice. European eggs are fertilized in the shell, while American eggs are released un fertilized and fertilization occurs in open water. Artificial fertilization in laboratories could reduce larval mortality, and tile-growing is impractical due to tides. The suggested national approach favors releasing fertilized eggs into favorable waters and may invite state action while acknowledging French methods for individual use.
