Local residents depart for visits and events

Fairfield Busy With Chautauqua And Growers

Fairfield residents engage in chautauqua events and social visits as guests and locals travel for millinery studies and fairs. Many attend Des Moines state fair, Davenport meetings, and prepare for Parsons college openings this week.

A Good Woman Gone

Nancy J. Watson Fickel born January 11 1851 in Van Buren county Iowa died August 19 1907 near Fairfield after a long illness. She married S W Fickel November 14 1872 and left a husband four children two sons William Alfred and John at home and Elizabeth Myrtle who died at sixteen months. She leaves brothers Lem and John Watson sisters Mattie Williams Nora Langdon and Sarah Sherman. A Primitive Baptist church member for twenty years she hosted monthly gatherings at her home and was praised as a devoted wife mother neighbor and neighborly model who died within thirty six hours of illness. Funeral at her home led by Elder Sowers of Moulton and burial at Hillsborough.

Death of James J Pattison at McClelland Home

James J Pattison died last Thursday evening at the home of R A P McClelland after a brief illness. He was about forty nine and unmarried.

Man Dies on McClelland Farm After Long Residence

An elderly man age and longtime resident of McClellands died at his home on the farm where he was born. Funeral services were held at Cedar Presbyterian Church and he was buried in Pattison Cemetery.

Weather and Crop Report Week Ending August 26, 1907

The week saw daily temperatures 3 to 4 degrees below normal with sunshine above average. Frequent showers in the north contrasted by dry fair cool weather overall. Rain needed in western districts to aid crops. harvest progress strong with small grain stacking and threshing and initial fall plowing. Oats yield light, winter and spring wheat and barley fair. corn progress steady though nights slowed growth. Pastures and meadows show good condition with robust aftermath growth.

Merrimac Iowa residents recount travel to Austin Nevada Fairfield and Des Moines for fairs and state events. Harry McGuire married Miss Saunders of Weyland then left for Kansas City and coast. A 67 person picnic honored Mrs Mary Smithline and Jessie with a bounteous dinner under shaded trees. Threshing nears finish as grain turns out fairly well.
