A crowd watched a fireworks display on a Burlington river launch when a premature explosion ignited a barge and a nearby launch. Five people leaped into the Mississippi. two men from Mt. Pleasant drowned, while Mrs L Con verse and Mrs J D Conover survived. Rescuers saved three others as chaos followed the blast.
West Point Taft ordered seven cadets dismissed for involvement in hazing Roland O. Sumner brother of the late Lieut. James J. Sutton of the Naval Academy. Albert E. Crane of Arden Iowa named among those dismissed. Sutton beaten during guard duty and left for hospital. Congress barred hazing prompting a strict probe and actions.
Arnold's Park Okoboji Ia Aug 21 A collision near Steven’s Rock between a Des Moines man L Nelson and a launch sent two children into the water. Nelson saved one child but the Des Moines girl could not swim and drowned. The launch remained nearby and the body was recovered at daylight.
Washington. D C Aug 20 Secretary of Agriculture Wilson reports the 1908 crop year produced a record 7 778 billion dollars in farm product value. He notes gains outpaced declines and cites corn leading the totals with 1 615 billion. He highlights dairy eggs and poultry nearing 800 million and praises racial progress alongside agricultural growth.
Five men were injured in an automobile accident near St. Anthony when a car driven by Lewis LaPlant went off a bridge and occupants were pitched about thirty feet to the creek bank. Two men were seriously hurt David Blackburn and Harry Buck among the injured were on their way home from State Center after attending a funeral. The car was badly wrecked.
In Louisville on August 21 Booker T. Washington sketched the progress of African Americans since emancipation and urged planning for the 1913 centennial. He noted growth from a handful of black owned drug stores to about 200 nationwide and the rise of negro banks from six to forty seven, among other enterprises.
Three year old Carl Hochspetter fell from a platform edge into a deep well in Winterset Madison County Iowa. A neighbor girl screamed for help and R C Rouse the lineman descended with a rope to pull the boy from the water. The child revived after restoratives and is expected to recover.
Washington August 20 reports flood the commerce department with letters on Tafts order to remove politics from census supervision and enumeration. Officials say the policy will be strictly enforced and some county leaders may have to resign if they hold political posts while serving as supervisors or enumerators.
Frank Gotch the champion wrestler along with local athletes pulled George Snyder from the Des Moines river whirlpool at West Dam Humbolt Iowa Snyder was unable to free himself and was submerged briefly before Gotch and L B Winne formed a chain and rescued him.

The Rev. C. S. McElhinny longtime pastor of Mt Zion Presbyterian Church died in Stockport on Friday morning August 20 1909 after a wedding trip ill aloud from acute indigestion. Born Fairfield September 10 1856 he studied at Parsons College and Allegany Theological Seminary. He is survived by wife Carrie Spellman two children Marion and Marjorie a sister Elizabeth and a brother Bernard S. McElhinny. Funeral held Sunday at 3 pm with city pastors. burial at Evergreen Cemetery.

Four women from prominent Vancouver families were killed when an automobile plunged from a trestle into a Seattle river. The high speed crash occurred as the machine ran off the trestle at night, prompting sea and rescue efforts.

Archie Wheeler an 18 year old boy fell sixty five feet in a new coal shaft at his father s mine near Fansler nine miles north of Guthrie Center Iowa He jumped from the cage to the top of the rope rack breaking the plank and plunging to the bottom He is alive at Harrison hospital conscious but paralyzed from the hips and recovery is doubtful.
Robert Taintor, Beloit college athlete, was sentenced to two years in the Green Bay state reformatory for burglary and arson in La Crosse Wisconsin. He admitted faking a suicide to mislead investigators and used the alias Arthur Dearborn to shield the Taintor family name.
In Lowell Indiana Prince a shepherd dog saved four year old Elsie Mason from drowning in the Kankakee river after she toppled from a rowboat. He grabbed her dress with his teeth and swam to shore where he was hailed by villagers and gifted with water lilies placed around his neck. The child and dog share day of adoration as Elsie’s parents look on.
Des Moines reports the first ripe wonderberries of the season received by Wesley Greene state horticulturist from S C Strain of Berwick. Strain notes berries grown from seeds supplied by Wizard Burbank. Greene doubts wonderberries will be in the state fair horticultural exhibit.
