Whistles at Marshall as baby and other oddities

Altoona sees large immigration loss and plans horse venture

The Altoona area loses fifteen citizens to immigration in three months amid a prospect of a horse importing and breeding establishment near Spencer. A stock company will be formed for the venture. The Third Iowa Infantry reunion is set for Aug 31–Sept 1 at West Union.

Robbery Ring Busted in Pennsylvania Rail Yard

Philadelphia August 17. Five prisoners including Frank Drake and his wife along with four brakemen are held after police found stolen goods in their homes. Two ring leaders remain at large as investigations continue into the rail yard thefts and pawn shop trafficking.

Terrible Accident Mars Illinois Reunion Grounds

At the Eighty-seventh Illinois regiment reunion two cannon mishaps injure several men. Jas Brocktt of Carmi loses his right arm, Robert Johnson of this place loses a thumb, Jobe Sullenger of McLeansboro loses both arms, and Irwin Reader, William Daniels, and Emanuel Berry suffer serious injuries. The incidents cast a pall on the closing day of the reunion.

Fire at Walnut destroys multiple grain elevators and businesses

A blaze at Walnut at 12:15 a.m. destroyed Clayton and Schofield’s grain elevator and Spangler’s elevator, plus Howard’s livery stable and several nearby buildings. Thirteen structures burned, four families were homeless, and property loss approached $60,000. Firefighting efforts from Avoca and Atlantic arrived too late. arson is suspected but unconfirmed.

Duel With Tarantulas Ends in Death in Tampico
