A horse driven by a woman at Chautauqua park bolted through Burlington Street on a crowded night. The rider guided the horse along the center as she passed other vehicles until the corner of I D Jones. Police officer Al Bennett stopped the animal with a club, preventing a serious accident amid heavy travel. Strong praise given to city officers for traffic policing during the event.

Suspects Take to Their Heels at Chautauqua Grounds
Sheriff Shan Campbell questioned two strangers lingering near the dining room tent at the Chautauqua grounds. One man carried a ladies watch he claimed was found on the Co B and Q train No 2 Saturday night. When asked about its origin the pair fled toward the southeast countryside as Campbell arranged a ride to the depot to check for reports. The watch may be returned to its rightful owner after railroad detectives are notified.

Supervisors Convention Delegates Return From Burlington

Two Boys Drowned in Drainage Ditch Near Ayrshire
Emmettsburg Iowa Aug 18 two 17 year old boys Namard Coddington and John Compton drowned in Palo Alto Pocahontas drainage ditch between Ayrshire and Curlew. Their clothes lay along the ditch and after more than an hour the bodies were recovered. Likely swimming accident with cramps and one helping the other. Both youths were sons of well known farmers.

Osceola Iowa August 19 Hugh Duke aged 76 a retired farmer and Civil War veteran was ground to death under a freight train near the depot at 10 am. He was deaf and failed to hear the approaching locomotive. The body was mutilated in a horrible manner.
