Tennessee lower house ratifies the suffrage amendment by a 49 to 48 vote after a dramatic shift from a 48 to 48 tie. Opponents vow to pursue reconsideration and legal challenges, while suffragists claim clear victory and praise Judge Seneca Cornell for court bench support.
O B Sipes sold his Bowman 80 acres west of town to Chas Heald of Packwood for 350 dollars per acre. The tract has no improvements, making the price appear favorable according to Ollie News.

Mrs. Chas. A Johnston of Birmingham won four first premiums three seconds and two thirds plus the sweepstakes for best poultry display at last week's fair. She exhibited White Rock chickens and also showed Fisher train birds.
An omission in last week's Tribune noted Stuckey Gossick Milling Company as a major stock food producer with a large plant and many workers. The firm reports continued growth and prosperous manufacturing activity.
Chas. A. Johnston of Birmingham Fairfield reports a man and woman stole his car near the Fair store last Friday morning. The couple fled down West Broadway at high speed pursued by Johnston and a helper in a large car. A freight train blocked progress near Loudon factory, but Johnston recovered his car after the thrill ride and the pair claimed they took the wrong vehicle.
Geo W White, formerly of Fairfield, writes from Pine Grove Montana about near polar sunlight, cool nights, abundant vegetables, and cheap cattle at 55 cents a head for the season. He notes fine oats and a promising wheat harvest and recalls neighbors Geo W McClain Peter Manatrey and John P Manatrey, and extends best wishes to the Tribune and its readers.
Jackson County claims the most pioneers in the state with settlements dating to Iowa being part of Wisconsin. Frank Burleson and his wife marked sixty years of marriage and his eighty third birthday on the same farm he was born, a rarity in Iowa. Neighbor John Sims, 66 years on the same farm since 1854, was a young man of 22 then.
Fairfield Chautauqua kicked off with a strong start as stores closed at 2 PM and business leaders led a band parade to the grounds. Rev. Keesey introduced the session, the Chicago Operatic Co. presented musical numbers, and humorist Strickland Gillilan drew a large audience with his stories and quips about moose and family jokes.
Home demonstration agents census rural residences to estimate modern conveniences in each township. One area reports 119 automobiles and 17 bathtubs signaling a campaign to aid farmers' wives who still lack labor-saving equipment. Women’s clubs push the slogan modern homes with labor saving devices.
The Clover Leaf Hampshire farm of Batavia owned by D. P. Fulton showed fine Hampshire hogs at the fair last week. Thirteen of the seventeen pigs in the Boys' club were from this farm. Club members praise the hogs and Fulton believes his line cannot be beaten.
Averaging 285 dollars per head, the Boys and Girls Calf club calves sold Saturday at the Elder feed barn. Calves were appraised at 225 dollars at draw, with 60 dollars for three months of feed. Prizes totaling 400 dollars were awarded across four groups, with H. D. McClain winning Grand Champion 40 dollars. Judges included Clyde Tarkington and Mr. Miller.
The Old Settlers Quartet visited Ottumwa last Sunday as guests of Rev. H. J. Hogan. They attended St. Patrick's parish gathering at the park and were banqueted at the Ottumwa hotel after an afternoon of song and speaking.
Jefferson county farmer warns frost could delay maturity and soften ears if cold returns. Weather bulletin urges unusually favorable conditions next month to avert frost damage across the state as corn is mainly in roasting ear stage and some fields may fail to dent.
A meeting of rural and grade teachers outside Fairfield is scheduled for Friday, August 27, at 1 30 p m at the courthouse to discuss school matters and share information.
The Jefferson County Fair drew large crowds and set records in racing, livestock, and attendance despite threatening skies and rain. Cyrus Landers won multiple Percheron events while Grove Bros. dominated Clydesdales. A. S. Heaton and Grant Enlow led dairy divisions with high milk yields and harmonious Island-bred Jerseys.
The Walmer family marked fifty years of marriage at their Alliance home on August 11 from seven to ten p m. A. W. Walmer known as Uncle Andy, longtime carpenter, is tied to Fairfield via his brother the late Daniel Walmer. Mrs. Walmer, formerly Miss Jane Camblin, ties to the Camblin family of Fairfield with roots in Holdredge and Fairfield. Their daughter Maud Enid and her husband Royal Harris reside on a farm nearby with five grandchildren. The event became a family reunion celebrating harmony across generations.
A. L. Posts in Iowa Number 520 plans Armistice Day events on November 11 with a victory medal presentation to every soldier and nurse who served from April 6, 1917, to November 1, 1918. The War Department assigns regional distribution and post commanders will oversee medal applications and ceremonies.
