R. A. Kelly of Harrisburg Louisiana finishes painting the 85 foot high Jefferson County Home water tank. He says it isn’t much work for a steeplejack who has painted bridges and tanks some 600 feet high. The tank, erected eighteen years ago, holds about 20 000 gallons and is being painted for the second time.
Healthland promotes its chautauqua venue with free tourist information at Red Cross First Aid tent Lot 54 Main Street Chautauqua Park. Maps and guides show routes and sites like Milky Wa peedean Capital of land, Healthland Flyer schedules, and Healthland baseball games with novel local lore and attractions.
Three Chicago youths riding on a Rock Island freight train to Omaha were pinned by their legs when a gondola car shifted after a breakage stopped the train near Stone street crossing. Prominent farmers in the county northwest area sign and file a petition asking the county auditor to establish a 46 foot wide road. The route starts at the northeast corner of the southwest quarter of section 20 in township 73 range 11 and runs west three-fourths of a mile to the northwest corner of the southwest quarter of the southeast quarter in section 19. The road would connect with the north south road through section 19. The petition, signed by directly interested property owners, will follow statutory procedures.
Dean Howard McDonald elected president of Parsons College to succeed Dr. R. Ames Montgomery who resigned to lead Centre College. McDonald has served as Parsons dean for four years and will continue teaching history and economics while guiding the institution. He is 46, educated at Muskingum Princeton and Michigan.
October 12 has been selected as the probable date for the annual district convention of the Womans Relief Corps to be held in this city with local members as hostesses. The district includes Washington Des Moines Louisa Jefferson Lee Van Buren and Henry counties and seventeen organizations will be represented. The entertainment committee plans a larger crowd and a fine program.

County Engineer M. H. Bryant married Florence Brown of Minneapolis on Saturday evening at Rev. L. A. Swicher’s residence. The couple, who began their acquaintance in Algona six years ago, will reside at 304 East Broadway Fairfield and soon start housekeeping. Mrs. Bryant is noted as a musician and singer.
Lieut. Messett of the local service company was treated at the county hospital for a severe thigh wound from an accidental rifle discharge by Claude Kerr at the armory Monday afternoon. The bullet entered the outer thigh, passed through the bone, and lodged beneath the skin on the inner thigh. The rifle, reportedly out of the armory and not known to be loaded, fired while Kerr was inspecting it.
Miss Ora Mae Gerling who has been a guest at the W. B. Morris home for two weeks returned to Indianola Sunday afternoon. She leaves for Atlantic Iowa September first to join the high school faculty as English instructor.
Mrs. H. B. Spellman is recovering from injuries after a Sunday collision three miles southeast of Fairfield on the Glasgow road. Her husband Mr. Spellman and two children escaped with minor injuries while the other driver Guy Fry suffered chest injuries and both cars were wrecked. Spellman says Fry crossed to the wrong side at speed, causing the head on crash as he moved to the roadside to avoid it.
Ray Cornell’s Ford was taken Tuesday night from outside the northwest entrance of the fair grounds. The Wapello county sheriff recovered the vehicle Wednesday and returned it to Cornell after the car had been stripped of windshield tires lights cushions and tools.
Sheriff Walter Harris purchases the Fred Graber market on North Main Street. During his term the market will be run by C. A. Huffman who has connections with the Southern New Chicago market.
Jefferson county officials opened the annual fair with hope the weather jinx is broken for the week. Attendance on Tuesday was modest but promising for later days as pleasant weather returns. Accidents marred racing, including a horse breaking a rider’s shoulder and a horse killed. another driver fell from a sulky but escaped serious harm. The fair offers varied attractions from trained pigs to aerial acts, concerts by the 183rd Regiment band, fireworks, and the seaplane novelty drawing crowds.
In district court Judge Cornell ordered Mary Sophia and William Miller aged nine, three, and five to be sent to the Soldiers' Orphans Home in Davenport. Deputy Maude Harris took the children there Monday evening. The case reveals years of neglect beginning with the mother’s removal to ward care and the father’s disappearance after investigations began.
Tom Freshwater was fined $500 by Judge Cornell on Monday after violating an injunction restraining liquor sales. In default of payment, he faces 100 days in jail.
Ralph Maxwell, twelve year old son of Ray Maxwell, broke his arm after a fall from a tree in Chautauqua park on Sunday. His other arm was injured in an accident about six months ago.
