Obituary notes the death of Chitor Allison, longtime local figure, succumbing to complications of age. Details remain sparse in the notice.
Aug. 4. Senator Allison died at his Dubuque residence after a lengthy illness. He had sought country air at Mrs. Stout’s home and was under constant care by Doctors Hancock and Lew. His death ends a record of 35 years in the Senate and 8 in the House. The campaign burdens were believed to have hastened the end. Funeral arrangements will be announced.
Miss Mary Linsey of Epworth Iowa former resident tells of a Washington romance that ended in desertion. The fiancé fled to the Klondike leaving her heartbroken and mentally broken, and she plans to return to Iowa to live among family and simple country kindness.
Six candidates vie for the nomination at the state convention with a strong Des Moines showing. The Polk county contest features five Des Moines hopefuls including Judge Hugh Brennan Judge James A Howe and city counsel W H Bailey. Other contenders hail from Indianola Fort Dodge and Ottumwa while Democrats back W H C Jacques. Meanwhile a sun baked egg fry on a city brick walk amuses desk sergeant Chris Myers as heat reaches 98 degrees.
Des Moines August 1 1908 crop bulletin reports King Corn 9 percent better than last August 1 with other crops also up. Corn is booming but rain is needed in several sections. Hay harvest advances though yields lag expectations. Winter wheat and barley show good quality with 20 to 35 bushels per acre.
Iowa Falls police pursue two smooth grafters selling a powder claimed to prevent gasoline from exploding and lamps from smoking. They demonstrate by throwing powder into gasoline barrels, selling to merchants for 4.50 to 18. The pair travel by overland route and have thrived in western Iowa communities.
Eldora Iowa August 1 Dr W L Evers assistant state veterinarian was called to the state industrial school for boys to test the farm cattle for tuberculosis. The action is taken to protect state institutions from infection and similar inspections are planned at other state institutions with cattle.
Two workmen began dismantling the tallest chimney in America near Constable Hook Bayonne prompting a shutdown of the copper smelting plant. The 30 foot sections will be replaced by 30 more and the job will last weeks as 500 workers move gear. The men joked about chatting with angels from the summit as they labored.
Ottumwa Iowa August 1 cooking eggs on the sidewalk is a new departure in Ottumwa. A man demonstrates that a cook stove is not needed in this weather and the experiment draws curiosity from passersby.
The Iowa Sheriffs' association plans to sue nearly every county for unpaid deputy salaries dating back five years. In counties with one deputy, the sheriff argues the county should pay the deputy, while in counties with multiple deputies the sheriff covers part of the pay. The Fayette county ruling favoring the sheriff is under appeal to the state supreme court, with actions likely statewide if upheld.
In Creston Iowa the Eighth district Democratic congressional committee elected J J Reddy of Shenandoah as chairman J J Doty of Shenandoah as treasurer and Joseph Kriddlebaugh of Charlton as secretary Dr J W Reynolds presided and the meeting included substantial county representation. The panel then went into executive session to plan further organization.
Major R D Kellogg of Twenty sixth street and University avenue died last evening after a paralysis stroke. A Civil War era legislator, he championed a war resolution pledging Iowa to support the Union with men and money. Interment will be in Garden Grove Iowa. His wife and several intimate friends were with him. His children were away in Europe and the Philippines.
Roy Normann a farm hand from near La Harpe drowned yesterday afternoon after refusing police order and attempting to swim to the Iowa shore. He had been drinking in Burlington and, despite rescue efforts, died. Son of John Normann, longtime Gilbert-Hedge Lumber employee of Burlington, his death drew sincere regret from friends and neighbors.
Frank Gotch is in Chicago studying a play written for him by Irving Lee. The production will debut at Hammerstein’s in New York on September 7 with Gotch portraying a college hero.
In Des Moines Iowa one hundred thirty four residents who obtained divorces had decrees that were not filed due to attorney fees or court costs. Judges ordered decrees to be filed but none were, causing many to believe they are divorced. Some have remarried under this delusion.
Word from Seattle reports the marriage of Miss Lois Thompson formerly of New Providence Iowa and Roy W. Thompson government teacher of Eskimo Inlet at Little Diomede Island Alaska. Miss Thompson was raised and educated in New Providence and taught in Hardin County schools.
Miss Emily May Trotter of Ottumwa Iowa marries Dr. James Buchanan Wilson in a noon ceremony at Mrs Harrison Watermans home. The wedding followed a courtship of over a year and was witnessed by the bride’s sister and a few relatives. The couple plans a prolonged Canadian honeymoon visit to their old home.
A crowded Otumwa Street Railway car filled with Morrell Packing Co. workers was saved from plunging twelve feet onto Rock Island tracks when a telephone pole intervened. The car left the rails and began to roll toward the embankment but swerved after striking the pole. Several passengers were hurt in the jump to safety.
Des Moines Iowa August 2 The Polk County Medical Association considers a rash of mild cat related hydrophobia cases. A six year old boy bitten by a cat at the Phillips home near Grand View is treated at Pasteur Hospital. The cat died soon after returning home from among several days absence and may have been rabid. Brain tissue may be sent to Iowa City laboratory for study.
