The death of the great Bismarck removes from the world one of the era's leading figures. His passing deeply mourned by Germans fuels debate on progress and territorial expansion as the democratic party weighs direction and future gains for the nation's children.
The Tribune distances itself from the Sixth District Democrats while mocking James B. Weaver as a worn out candidate. It argues voters won’t elect him and urges party leaders to nominate someone with real electability.
The Democratic judicial convention will meet at Ottumwa on August 9 to select four candidates for judgeships. The Spanish government is to be offered peace via the French ambassador M Cambon. The terms demand outright U S cession of Puerto Rico and other West Indies islands except Cuba. Spain relinquishes sovereignty in Cuba to U S control until a stable government is set up. A coaling station in the Ladrone islands is sought. No debts or cash indemnity. The Philippines to be governed by a joint commission later. the U S will control Manila and surrounding areas in the interim. Spain’s reply is awaited, possibly ending the war soon.
The Tribune announces a call for the county convention to be held Saturday September 3 at the courthouse. A total of 66 delegates will be chosen at ward and precinct primaries on Thursday September 1 at 7 30 PM at the usual voting places unless altered by the local committeeman.

The democrats of the Second judicial district of Iowa will meet in a delegate convention in the west court room of the court house in Ottumwa on Tuesday August 9 1898 at 1 30 PM to nominate four candidates for judge and conduct other business. Delegates are apportioned by county and votes for Fred E White in 1897. Committeemen are to arrange delegate selection per the plan. W H Jaques Chairman.
The Iowa Democrats plan a delegate convention in Marshalltown on September 7, 1898 at 10:00 AM to nominate for state offices including Secretary of State and Railroad Commissioners. The convention will have 1080 delegates with representation by county and vote totals from 1897 governor race.
