Congress meets next Monday. Gen. F. M. Drake of Centerville and ex congressman E. H. Conger are announced as out for the republican nomination for governor. Gov Boies denies retiring from politics at end of term. He has no desire to remain in politics.
Instead of half fare to Chicago being granted, the new rate is half fare for the round trip plus two dollars. From Pairfield the trip now costs about $9.70 round trip, versus the prior reduced fare of 12.52.
Jefferson county Republicans meet at a Scott County convention last Saturday where delegates to the state convention were instructed to oppose Iowa's prohibitory law and authorized to take reasonable steps to secure its repeal.
The piece argues the McKinley law raised wheat duties from 20 to 25 cents per bushel under false pretenses, causing prices to plummet. It claims Republican laws harmed farmers and bankers alike and predicts farmers will enjoy watching them fail.
