River Outlawry on the Arkansas River Steamer Ambush

The Ida Darragh reached Memphis with officers reporting a mob of several hundred fired on the steamer near Burnett's Landing, fatally wounding Alfred Wisner a Polish convict overseer. A young machinist from Clinton or DeWitt Ill was arrested for debt avoidance and sentenced to field work. Wisner the three Black convicts were arrested, one Black man died fleeing into the river, and the sheriff with wounded Wisner and two uninjured convicts were taken to Arkansas City aboard the City of New Orleans boat.

Indians Lease Western Reserve for Grazing, Mobiles Tenants

Advices from the Indian Territory report the Arapahoe and Cheyenne lease of western reservation lands for grazing could transform the Indian question. The rental nears 63000 dollars annually paid in cash and cattle, with each person receiving five dollars, and tribes starting cattle herds of about eight hundred cows and twenty five blooded bulls. The Interior Department will match cattle investment to form common herds, aiming for herd value of about three million dollars after six years.

Terrific cyclone sweeps Minnesota and states nearby

Charles Heywood Stratton known as Tom Thumb died in Middleboro Massachusetts on the morning of the 15th after a life spent as the famed dwarf attraction under P T Barnum. He was born January 4 1858 in Bridgeport Connecticut and at his death was 45 years old.
