Cownie Buys 200 Acres Near Anamosa For Convict Farm Use

Des Moines April 26. Chairman Cownie of the state board of control closed the purchase of 200 acres near the Fort Madison prison. About 150 acres will be farmed for convicts with the remaining hillier land unused. The site lies about a mile back from the Mississippi and will test outside employment for prisoners. Other notes include a dismissed waitress at Glenwood for striking a feeble minded girl and sidewalk work at Oakdale sanitarium for tuberculosis care.

Irving B Chittenden age 20 son of a Chicago physician was arrested in Iowa City for obtaining money under false pretenses. He targeted college fraternities nationwide and admitted swindling the Des Moines Elks on his way from the Nebraska university.
