Gen John C Black has announced his candidacy for Illinois senator to replace Cullom. The legislature that elects the senator will be chosen this fall. Black promises a strong campaign and, if elected, a successful senate tenure.
Chairman Voorhies opened debate with a set speech on Monday and plans to keep the tariff bill before the senate daily until disposition. He predicts passage by May 1 and that a month later it will leave the finance committee as a law.
Gov Northen of Georgia had appointed Speaker Crisp last week to fill Senator Colquitt's vacancy but Crisp declines and will remain in his current House seat. Ex Speaker Reed acknowledges Crisp is in the right place and cannot bully him.
