The Fayette County Union argues reciprocity is free trade under another name. It notes a two cent per pound bounty on home made sugars paid from the government treasury and returned as subsidy, a tax shift from many to the few.
In Chicago at least five municipal tickets contend including regular democratic and republican tickets, citizens' ticket, democratic bolters led by Carter Harrison, and the socialistic ticket. Prediction favors the regular democrat or regular republican, with slight edge to the former.
A Louisiana sugar producer sells Iowa corn producer twenty pounds of sugar for $1.00. Government pays 40 cents on every dollar. Sugar producer nets $1.40 per dollar of sugar. With $100 worth of sugar he gets $140. The corn grower sells $100 of corn and pays 340 in taxes to the government, leaving him $60. The Tribune argues the policy makes the Iowa farmer rich.
The State Temperance Alliance pursues legal routes to end a prohibitory amendment by asking the Iowa Supreme Court to rule its adoption proper. J A Harvey filed a mandamus in Polk County to compel the Secretary of State to provide a certified copy of the constitution containing the amendment. The outcome hinges on lower court action, with the belief the scheme may fail, yet it signals persistent prohibition efforts and calls for stronger opposition.
After a lengthy review the executive council increased Iowa railroad assessments from 42.86 million to 44.56 million excluding sleeping car service. The move, supported by Democrats, raises total rail taxes by about 60 thousand annually and aims to better equalize property taxation across the state.
