By Ed Silverstein Democrats are stunned after a historic defeat that lifted Republicans to control two major town bodies. Republican John Metsopoulos defeated incumbent Democrat Kenneth Flat by about 820 votes, shifting the balance on the finance board and the Representative Town Meeting RTM.
Election results show the GOP majority at 35 to 15 on the Board, with Board of Finance moves widening to six to three and the Board of Education at five Republicans to four Democrats. Metropoulos blamed last minute negative campaigning by Flatto, who countered with charges the mailings contained false statements. Metropoulos won 8,018 to 7,198 over Flatto, while Mary Carroll-Mirylees became selectman with 7,402 votes and Kathleen Howard fell to 7,020.
A 48 inch, 95 year old water main ruptured early Sunday on Black Rock Turnpike, sending a six to eight foot geyser and debris across the area. The Fire Department evacuated residents and shut a portion of the road for over a day while repairs continued. by Tuesday one lane remained open. Over 250 residents faced water outages and others had dirty water as crews investigated the cause, with officials citing a pressure surge as the likely reason.
