Antonio Marcia an Italian laborer at Richland Iowa Central was attacked by two men who beat him unconscious and robbed him of 200 dollars. The robbers fled dropping the money near the car door. Marcia remains in serious condition but is recovering though hospitalized. No arrests or strong clues yet. descriptions are vague.
Rev. W. A. Wolgemuth was formally installed as pastor at First Lutheran Church in a Sunday service attended by a full congregation. The installation was led by Rev. Harvey M. Leech, president of the Iowa Synod, who read the service after charges to the congregation and pastor. Dr. H. D. Hoover of Carthage, Illinois, delivered the pastor’s charge, referencing Leviticus and the Lord’s sanctification before the congregation.
The 160 acre farm east of Fairfield on the Burlington road known as the old Gallagher farm, recently owned by Charles S. Crail and Joe S. Crail, sold to A. L. Hill for 165 dollars per acre. Hill, who came from Illinois years ago, plans to return to Jefferson county and make it his permanent home.
In June 1906 Zion's congregation in Enola Pennsylvania withdrew from pastoral ties with other churches and unanimously called Rev Wolgemuth. Under his ministry church membership rose from 65 to 318 and Sunday school from 110 to 324. Endeavor Society grew from 21 to 160 while annual income rose to 2656 and benevolence to 230. He has received four tacit calls from Pittsburg Brooklyn State College and Fairfield. A welcome reception for Rev and Mrs Wolgemuth was planned for Thursday at 7 30 p m at the home of Mr and Mrs J A Hugtin.
Fairfield automobilists are being watched by four special policemen who will report to Mayor Clarke any violations of the ordinances regarding car operation. Complaints have been many and the mayor has appointed these men to note careless driving and similar offenses to curb petty disturbances. They have no arrest power, only observation reports.
The Fairfield Chautauqua may feature Theodore Roosevelt or Gifford Pinchot next summer as invitations remain uncertain. William Louden extended a personal invitation at the St Paul conservation congress, with no reply yet. The 1911 assembly runs August 16 to 25, with several acts already considered though contracts are unsigned and changes possible.

Rev Walter Allen Walgemuth was installed Sunday as pastor of the First Lutheran church. Born January 15 1875 in Mount Joy Pa he studied medicine briefly before earning A M and B A from Susquehanna College and was ordained in 1902 by the Susquehanna Synod at Berwick. He previously served St Marks Zions and New Market congregations.
Mrs. Mary E Hopper of Chicago national lecturer and organizer of the Womens Christian Temperance Union will discuss the organizations work at the Christian church Wednesday evening at eight. She recently spoke at the world W CT U conference in Glasgow and at the Fr Madison convention.
Dr McPherson sold 185 hogs last Saturday at nine cents a pound. They brought $5154.00 or an average of $27.86 per head. The hogs were young and fat, put on feed in May, and lauded as the fat test hogs ever shipped from Fairfield. He drove them to market, noting they did better than if hauled.
Out of town guests W G Crow Ellsworth Reminger S W Brookhart and Capt W G Heaton will speak at the Jefferson County soldiers and sailors reunion. Fairfield locals will also speak. The program runs from 10 a m at G A R Hall to 7 30 p m at Armory Hall with meals served by W R C.
The Washington post office department urges postmasters to persuade patrons to install private mail receptacles or door slots to improve city delivery. A circular from acting first assistant postmaster general E T Bushnell notes widespread material benefits and asks officials to canvass households and businesses and report progress.
Miss Helen McCord accepts a violin teaching position at the Slingerland College of Music in Chicago.
In district court Tuesday grand jury was drawn and empaneled with J. H. Miller as foreman. Continued criminal case against Jim Blakely. Numerous estate and guardianship matters approved or continued, executors appointed, and wills probated for Elizabeth Kauffman James Morse Abram Armstrong John Linder Harrison Collins others. Mary Louise Gosick minor and Mary J Frost matters noted with final reports and discharges. A separate damages suit filed by Henry Bureker against the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railroad Co. over cattle loss, land damage, and trespass. Will probate set for Monday.
Septembers case in Justice Wilson's court records Dr W Ewell of Richland fined $50 and costs after confessing he mistook two Mongolian pheasants for prairie chickens during hunting. Other cases: Roy Yeager fined $5 and costs for alleged assault on Mrs Otto Overholser over garden tomatoes. Justice Wilson also fines William Smith $5 for shooting squirrels out of season.
Alvord and Burdick of Chicago began an extensive feasibility study on relocating Fairfield's water and light plants. Possible options include moving near the Burlington and Rock Island crossing, moving south from the water works park with gravity water and a new filter system, or buying power from Fairfield Gas and Electric. The report will include cost estimates and recommendations for the city council, with a decision likely by the next meeting in about two weeks.
Lou Groff formerly of Jefferson County died unexpectedly Monday at his Antonito home at seven o clock yesterday evening. Relatives have received only that information the funeral will be in Antonito Thursday with burial there.
J. H. Johnson sold the Scott Chandler farm to Ed Flinspach for 160 dollars per acre. The property had previously sold six years earlier for 71 dollars per acre.
Henry Freeman died Sunday morning. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at the home of Mrs. D. Hoopes on West Adams street. The services were conducted by Rev. G. W. Burch.
