Washington reports that Germany’s wireless note to Wilson signals acceptance of armistice terms, but officials expect garbled text and foresee no immediate halt to fighting. The note claims a new parliamentary government and vows to curb armed leaders, while denouncing atrocities and proposing neutral inquiries.
Washington Oct 22 The official German note to President Wilson has reached the Swiss legation by cable. It will be handed to Secretary of State Lansing after decoding. Regardless of Wilsons reply, fighting is not expected to stop and the formal version should mirror the wireless message from Germany.
American forces push through Bois des Rappes and Boils Clairbechene west of Bantheville as fighting rages in woods. Units advance slightly northwest toward the Frey line, with one platoon clearing Clairbechene wood. Germans driven back along a three mile front toward outer Freya Stellung despite exposed open ground.
Paris reports French troops cross the Danube region near Viden. British forces advance north of Le Cateau and two miles from Valenciennes. Ghent lies under seven miles from Allied lines as Allied forces push along the Scheldt canal and Solesmes Le Cateau region. Oise crossing opened south of Etreux with northern Laon fighting. Valenciennes area remains tough as German terrain favors defense.
Northwest of Verdun Oct 22 American forces seized Bois De Rappe and Hill No 209 after a three hour assault. The engagement, supported by artillery and air, cleared the wood and hill despite concentrated German machine gun fire with 150 Germans captured.
Washington reports Germany is in a desperate crisis as Berlin's government appears chaotic. Officials say the crisis will determine the war’s duration and Germany’s stance on armistice terms and peace as outlined by President Wilson.
The Belgian government has begun calculating the total damage to Belgian property from German occupation. The council of ministers met at Havre and adopted procedures to verify civilian and public property claims for determining total compensation demanded from Germany.
Lafayette Indiana October 21 employees at the Monon railroad general headquarters subscribed 125000 dollars to the fourth loan. The entire system subscribed 260000 dollars indicating strong support for the bond issue across the line.
Washington reports show about 25 million subscribers for the fourth Liberty loan, surpassing the $6 billion goal by several hundred million. Orders for coupon and registered bonds are being filled, with volumes reflecting wide public participation and a rate near 20 percent of the population.
Barcelona proclaims President Wilson a citizen in unanimous tribute for his great efforts in favor of world justice. Several other Spanish cities plan similar honors for the U S president.
London reports General Haig’s forces pressing the German front on the northern French border. British troops reach the left bank of the Escaut in the Valenciennes sector and take the western part of Thiant, cutting a southeast rail line. They are within a mile of Tournai as the offensive advances.
French troops advance along the Serre front and reach the railroad northeast of Assissur-Serre as they press attacks. The operation marks continued progress against opposing forces in the river line area.
October 22 report from Des Moines states steps will be taken by the Iowa War Savings Committee to secure 100 percent redemption of War Savings Stamps pledges. Homer A. Miller, State Director, announces the drive and urges every Iowa signer to honor pledges. Government asks that December pledges be paid in November to close the campaign in December.
