Survivors recount a North Sea clash where two large German warships sank the destroyers Mary Rose and Strongbow and destroyed a convoy of neutral merchant ships. British admiralty confirms two destroyers and nine merchant ships lost, with 37 sailors saved and at least 150 neutrals dead.
Washington reports the Liberty loan drive in progress and close to the two billion mark with an estimated 1.9738 billion pledged. Officials say reaching 5 billion depends on strong district activity and a 1 billion subscription target on Liberty Day next Wednesday.
Sheriff’s posse searches for four robbers who blew safes at the Farmers State banks in Alto and Middleville. After cutting telephone wires they took 15000 dollars at Alto and then 22000 dollars at Middleville, twenty miles east.
Paris reports eight Zeppelins involved in the raid spent by fog and misnavigation. Four were destroyed or captured, L-49 forced to land near Bourbonne les Bains with 27 crew captured. London toll lists 27 dead and 53 injured from the first Zeppelin raid on the city in 12 months.
A party of 30 officers and 80 noncommissioned officers of the French field artillery arrived at an Atlantic port to assist in training U S National Army field artillery units. All members have active service experience and many recently manned guns in Verdun.
Crowder announces a new draft system that postpones physical exams until called and assigns registrants to five classes by economic worth. First priority goes to men with no dependents, then skilled farm labor, vital war industry workers, married men with dependents, and finally those exempted or disabled.
Two people died and three were seriously injured when a car was struck by the Denver Limited at the Lemont street crossing in Blue Island. Victims were Miss Emma Schroeder and Garrett Vendant, both of Blue Island. Injured were Miss Lucy Koch of Alberta Canada Alma Dost of Wisconsin and David Wondaal. They were taken to St Francis hospital. The train was traveling about fifty miles per hour.
Italian war office reports brisk engagements on the Trentino front despite adverse weather. Northeast of Laghi Postagi enemy parties were driven back as Italian and Austro-Hungarian troops fought with rifle fire in controlled skirmishes along the front.
German war office says Ostend bombardment damaged houses. British naval aircraft dropped large quantities of explosives on the Engel Airdrome and Bruges docks causing a fire. French reports say German night assaults west of Mont Cornillet and along the Meuse were repulsed with prisoners taken.
Survivors of the United States transport Antilles were landed by auxiliary vessels and cared for by the American consulate in a French port after a German submarine torpedoed and sank the ship. Survivors praised the captain and gun crew for staying at their posts as the vessel sank. The submarine was not sighted. many crewmembers died in their berths or during the frantic evacuation. Secretary McAdoo announced compensation and automatic insurance benefits for the 70 soldiers and sailors believed lost.
Free Administrator Garfield, en route to Ohio to visit his ailing mother, reported encouragement from Illinois, Indiana and Ohio where unauthorized strikes have occurred. He believes the strikers will resume work early this week as government considers adjusting coal price series and potential wage increases while avoiding decisions until work resumes.
In Chicago on October 22 a massive patriotic gathering on the lakefront and along Michigan Avenue displayed unity in support of the war effort. Governor Lowden Congressman Rainey and Clarence Darrow spoke to a crowd filling the Auditorium theater. A military procession, naval band, and infantry units followed, with Knights Templar in ceremonial dress and Lieut Schroeder performing thirty nine loops.
Police arrested Charles Wallman a pantryman on a yacht owned by Harry Payne Whitney for allegedly attempting to bribe a ship mechanic to board a former German liner being overhauled at a Brooklyn dry dock. The vessel was seized after the United States entered World War I.
