New York reports an explosion at the Gillespie munition factory in Morgan New Jersey at 10 30 A M.The blast shakes Morgan and nearby towns. Eight people are reported dead with the death toll rising. National authorities consider martial law for Morgan and surrounding communities.
Belgian forces push nine miles along a 25 mile front in Flanders after prior successes. About 10,000 prisoners are reported captured as gains threaten to push toward Ostend and Zeebrugge with the coast likely to be evacuated.
Vienna reports Austria Hungary asked Holland to invite belligerents to peace talks and that Holland has sent invitations. A Hungarian delegation led by Premier Wekerle arrived in Vienna, including Count Stephen Tisza Count Julius Andrassy and Count Albert Apponyi.
American forces report major Argonne gains with tanks defending Apremont and advancing near Blancfont and Medeah farm. French and American units drive into Champagne with tank and artillery assaults, taking prisoners as heavy fighting continues from Flanders to the Meuse.

In Trenton on October 5 Dr. Frederick M. Bischoff was sentenced to 25 years in the Maryland penitentiary for attempting to blow up the Gould and Eberhardt machinery plant and for war work at Irvington. Co-defendant William Henemeyer drew a shorter term, while Bischoff also received a 10 year sentence for distributing anti Red Cross nurse literature, to run concurrently. Otto Fruno Reichtel, Newark patent attorney, got eight years.
Hammond Ind Oct 5 federal court heard Joseph Kochs and Joseph Barat of South Bend charged with operating a blind tiger containing 1500 gallons of whisky. Chicago DOJ raided the farm finding armed guards patrolling boats. Whisky valued at unknown price bought in South Chicago.
