Sir Hiram Maxim inventor of the automatic firearm and pioneer of early aviation died in London after a period of illness. Born February 5 1849 in San Bernardino Maine he became a British baronet and created the first smokeless powder. In 1894 he built a heavier than air flying machine predating the Wright brothers by nine years.
Henry Arbutle nineteen year old chemist at International Dye Works was arrested in New York City for larceny by bailee of two thousand dollars worth of platinum. He allegedly stole from his employer and was tracked by private detectives aided by August Oesterreich president of the dye firm. Chicago priest guardian connected to the case remains unidentified. Arbutle reportedly devised a dye rivaling German formulas and kept its secret.
A state civil service investigation reports 393 persons hold classified positions without passing exams or certification. Secretary Ward R. Robinson released the findings after a commission order sought to root out merit rule violations involving temporary workers in the state service.
