McAdoo cites fatigue and need to restore family fortunes after years of work. He plans rest and possible return to private life.
President Wilson accepts the resignation of William G. McAdoo as secretary of the treasury and director general of railroads. McAdoo cites unavoidable needs of his family for retirement effective January 1 or upon a successor’s appointment. He plans a three month rest before seeking work, and no successor names are confirmed.
Treasury records show over 150 million silver dollars melted into bullion in recent months to supply India and other oriental markets. The vaults held 490 million dollars six months ago. the amount now stands at 338 million dollars.
Report from Copenhagen via Swedish sources says the Soviet government of Russia is nearing collapse. Authority has waned since the German armistice, with terror maintaining control for weeks. Several thousand American soldiers left Liverpool on the Lapland and Minnehaha for home. Crowds cheered as the troops departed, with the homeward movement continuing and the sick, convalescents, and exhausted divisions among the first to return to the United States.
